My little boy turnt 2 in April and has been in and out of hospital with his breathing. The slightest of a cold and he’s breathing gets bad. He has a temporary asthma pump for when it gets bad but there must be something else to stop the constant hospital trips.

Is he actually ending up with an infection?

My daughter has been hospitalised 10 times with pneumonia and eventually the respiratory consultant prescribed prophylactic antibiotics which helped.

I guess it depends why he’s in hospital.

Yes. Viral induced wheeze and chest infectionWhen admitted to hospital he’s always given multiple nebulisers, steroids and salbutamol inhalers.
They’ve given us Montelukast to try but after reading reviews and side effects me and his dad don’t want to give it to him.

If you don’t want to follow medical advice then I’m not sure what else you can do.

He needs a preventer medicine - if not Montelukast then something else. You need to discuss with paed/asthma nurse/gp your reasons for not giving Montelukast (have you tried it or are you just put off by side effects). I would have this discussion sooner rather than later, because the next trip to hospital with breathing difficulties could be much worse.
