Broken bones

Hello
I am really desperate for some ideas here. My child broke his wrist quite badly and has had an awful experience with the hospital. The x Ray ladies shouted at him with his arm bent at a right ankle, the plaster nurses have comment on not him again as we ended up having to have another cast put on because his bones slipped as the cast was too big. I had now been told his arm is clinically deformed😢 my child is so scared he is refusing to have the cast off. Been told no point keeping it on now . It may or may not straighten out.
Today on the second attempt he became hysterical waiting for his turn in the plaster removal area and we had to leave - any thoughts on how to get the cast removed? He is scared stiff of having it off as he will see the deformality as well the removal of the last cast hurt him so much .

Well that all sounds horrible no wonder hes scared.

You should definitely complain to PALs!

In terms of making him less scared, could you find some good reference material for him of what getting the plaster removed should be like. Off the top of my head on the BBC i think theres a Topsy and Tim episode about a broken bone (i know theyre annoying little shits but kids seem to like them), a Get well soon hospital episode too i think.

Reward for being a brave little man, something for him to look forward to

Distraction for while its happening - kindle with favourite show , music

Can you act it out, bandage up his toys, get him to remove the bandages etc.

He also needs to be referred to physio.

Contact PALs and detail your experience and ask if the hospital has a play therapist

Thank u I hadn’t of thought of any of that. He loves Topsy and Tim.
I will ask about physio as nothing as been mentioned about that. Am going to give it one more go tomorrow at the hospital and see how it goes. Think I’m dreading it as much as him

It is really awful watching your kid be hurt, i know id rather take the pain myself but it has got to happen.

You need to put on a positive, matter of fact front.

'ok sweetie, today we ARE getting your cast off, wont it be wonderful to have that horrible itchy heavy cast off off your arm. Lets do this quickly then, hey, how about a happy meal for lunch......'

Oh and my DD, just turned 5 finds all jokes about bodily function funnier than the funniest thing.

If shes upset, blowing raspberries, fart jokes, pretending to dig potatoes out of her ears and all such silly things will distract her and have her in fits.

' Right then, they're about to take that thing off your arm. I wonder how much mucks on that arm, oh no, i bet there'll be potatoes or all kinds of things in there. Do you think it will smell? Like a trump? [Insert fart noise] Whats the nasiest smelling thing you can think off? [Stage whisper pooooo]'

Just anything super silly, the kind of act you think about later and wonder how many adults looked at you and thought you were totally bonkers
