Why would 6 year old vomit once a month at 6am and then be totally fine?

The first few times it happened a few times with 7-10 day gaps. now it has been about a month since last one and here we are again.

It has happened on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays - she's missed nice activities that she was looking forward to because of it. Today she's devastated that she'll miss a party at school and is begging me to let her go in.

She has one bout of vomiting then fine within an hour (but misses two days of school).

The first time it happened there was a bug going round school and her little pals got it too.

GP said maybe it was a UTI - eh??? really?

DH thinks it's because she's eating too many clementines.

I'm wondering if she's not washing her hands properly (or at all) after using the loo and just keeps picking up bugs.

Do any of you have any experience or theories on what could be going on please? If it was too much of a food, wouldn't she be sick almost immediately rather than 14 hours later?

All your anecdotes are useful thank you!

I've just spoken to school and they're happy for her to come in tomorrow for the party given the lack of other symptoms and that we're following it up. DD is delighted to not miss out.

My son had cyclical vomiting syndrome from around age 7-16. Could be anything from 10 days to months in between episodes but always similar pattern. He would wake around 6am then vomit on and off for around 4 hours. He often had diarrhoea with it as well which I think is more uncommon. He would then sleep and wake up hungry and back to normal.

GP always dismissed this and we had to ask for a referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist to get it confirmed.

quick update - the doctor thinks it's a kind of acid reflux thing and we need to get her poo tested for a particular thing - Helicobacter Pylori I think?

Google says that H Pylori causes bad indigestion which she doesn't get. Only stomach ache immediately before the vomit.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on her diet to see if we can spot any triggers and we'll limit the number of clementines she eats in a day.

Just a quick update: we've just got back from holiday. On the journey out she vomited in the airport (just after clearing security, thank god!) had a snooze in the restaurant, then vommed again. It was about 5am.

And same again on the way home (FML!) Again it was about 5am.

So maybe it is excitement or anxiety??

Tiredness? We have to keep our kids on a pretty strict schedule to avoid them getting ill through tiredness.

My dd has cvs - she always vomits when we go on holiday combination of excitement and anxiety. She now recognises the symptoms if an attack is coming on - hers is preceded by really bad acid reflux, dr prescribed omneprazole to take as soon as the feeling starts and this has helped as she just feels sick rather than vomits. She also went to camhs to manage the anxiety so now has strategies she can use to avoid a full blown attack.

However she is now 15 and has had 5 years to learn to manage it. Before she was diagnosed we must have been tested for every allergy possible and a variety of illnesses - the drs were baffled! It was a locum that suggested she might have it.

quick update - the doctor thinks it's a kind of acid reflux thing

Our son vomits occasionally, there's no pattern other than it happens overnight (so he was lying down prior) and consists of just one actual vomit and not repeated retching. As I suffer occasionally from acid reflux during the night, I'm putting it down to the same thing.

As he has no other symptoms - no diarrhoea, no retching, none of his usual behaviours linked to stomach ache, he goes back to sleep once cleaned up - I've stopped telling school. It's not D&V, it's one instance of regurgitation.

My son started vomiting only when he stayed at my partners while I was at work and did this for months could not figure it out for ages he then started throwing up daily about 6 months after and finally we think he is lactose intolarant and the 6 months before was a slow telling of it happening make a daily diary of activities and food all food evan sweets when ever they throw up and a pattern will start but could take months. As we have a lactose intolarant and some pop and sweets and evan certain bread.

Steph2541 · 09/06/2019 18:54

My son does have very bad anxiety and it could be that triggering a food intolarance aswell, or as we use to do when he was younger he couldn't have any dairy when he was ill so we would avoid that food when a bug was around. (now he can not have dairy at all) Maybe the worry of a big day is the cause and children can have bad tummy when anxiety hits them and because dairy is heavy on the belly it might be not helping.

I'm just baffled. She doesn't ever say she has a sore stomach other than in the seconds before she vomits.

I asked her about it and she says maybe she was worried that our holiday wouldn't be as good as she wanted it to be. Not sure about the journey home.

Holiday food was quite different from usual home routine food, though there was a lot of milk the day before traveling home.

I think I'm leaning towards the excitement/anxiety theory at the moment.

I had H Pylori and I never vomited, BUT I do have crohns as well so my symptoms could've been hidden/masked by my crohns. I hope you find answers Op.

Hello.. did u ever find a cure to this?? My toddler is having these.. I am sure it’s not cvs as he is only 2.5 years old and his started after a stomach bug.. its been more than a month and I am desperate for answers

Susieblue18 · 05/05/2025 22:57

My son had cyclical vomiting syndrome that started when he was around 7. Always followed the same pattern, he would wake around 6-7 am, was sick on and off for a few hours (often with diarrhoea) then would fall asleep and be fine after a few hours. GP dismissed it but I asked to be referred to a paediatric gastroenterologist and they diagnosed it. He was given medication that reduced the severity of he took it as soon as he felt sick. He didn’t have to stay off school for 2 days as it wasn’t infectious. If it continues with the same pattern I would ask for a referral.

Thank you for getting back. I am currently waiting to hear back from GI . Was your son able to get past this? None of my kids had this and I have been to different doctors and ER TWICE but they all have different diagnosis. Not one that says they are sure what it is and this is how you treat it..!!
