Babys mouth always hanging open

My dd is 6 months old and her mouth is constantly open with her tongue hanging out.

We started trying to wean her a couple of weeks ago but it’s not going too well, she’s yet to take a spoonful of anything. Tried her with finger foods she puts things in but then it just stays in her mouth she doesn’t attempt to close her mouth to swallow or chew.

She drools a lot but I’m guessing that could be teething.

Is this normal, she is cmpa and did have issues with congestion when on normal formula but she seems 80-90% better since on prescription formula.

I don’t know whether to take to gp/hv Confused

My DD did this but she was born with tongue tie that was then snipped so she hadn't developed the same muscle movement in the womb IYSWIM?

Could she just really struggle to be breathing through her nose?

BettyBoo246 · 15/05/2019 22:21

She doesn’t sound congested although my dm says she thinks she often sounds rattly on her chest.

She also sleeps with her mouth open but It’s not hanging open like when she’s awake.

Hmm could be large adenoids? Ask your HV I guess?

You are concerned so it's definitely worth a visit to your GP. It's probably nothing to worry about but your GP will make the appropriate referral if he thinks it should be looked into. Good luck.

She probably has somewhat lower muscle tone in her oral area. When she starts eating watch for overstuffing mouth (to get oral feedback). DS was the same, he'd put in a biscuit and wait for the bit in his mouth to go soft, it took him a long time to learn to bite and chew (but he did!) He also sat with his tongue protruding from a hanging open mouth and drooled for a long time (until 3 or so). The pose he adopted is quite typical in youngsters with Downs syndrome, who also have low oral tone and often have a protruding tongue in toddler hood. It impacted him a bit in that he was the latest of mine to talk and again it took him a lot longer to learn to form sound shapes with his mouth - but he got there at around 2.5 and has no speech delay at all. He is also very clever and now he's at school he speaks like everyone else, no longer drools and is fine. We just watch that he doesn't overstuff his mouth (manners more than risk at his age) and doesn't swill juice around his mouth (risk of cavities. He swills to get oral stimulation again, I think).

Mine does this but had a cold since before Christmas and does it when concentrating. He eats fine, and chews hapiljy and is teething. I'm not too worried, some children do this.
But if you are worried than ask health visitor and they should be able to reassure you or if needed give advice

Found a pic of ds at 22 months with tongue partly out, he was like this or with it hanging out further most of the time back then. Mouth completely normal now.
