Worms???

My daughter has had an itchy bum for around 5 weeks. We’ve been to the GP and were prescribed canisten HC and laxido for constipation. I’d already thought of worms when it started but I couldn’t see anything at the time. Fast forward 3 weeks since using the cream still itchy. I had a look again and saw what looked like a small white milky colour thing around a cm. it wasn’t moving but when I touched it with my nail it curled into. Ball. I took this as a possible sign of worms and gave her and everyone else the ovex. I’m wondering if I should see anything in her poo if it was worms? I’ve not seen anything although the itching has calmed down a bit she occasionally still gives herself a wee scratch. Does anyone have any experience of worms? I’m at a total loss and my anxiety is through the roof with what the itching could be if not that

It takes a few days to work as it basically starves them to death. You then retreat after 2 weeks I think

Feel your pain. Don't forget individual nail brushes for each of you, clean pants overnight and strip all the beds. Hoover them too.

If your toothbrushes are out in the open you may want to replace them and put covers on the heads or in a cupboard.

They are persistent little critters.

Posted to soon. Everyone in the house should take it and again in two weeks.

Have a really low bar for treating worms, treat everyone just in case if anyone in the household itches

Rule of thumb, itchy backside in kids treat for worms first.

If you've allowed it to go this long your house will need blitzing. The eggs could be everywhere. You'll need to clean all door handles, light switches, touchables, damp dust everywhere and any toys she plays with.

Treat her and the household again 2 weeks after the first to catch the hatchlings.

Next time, don't mess about looking at her poo, just treat.

You've seen a live worm, why would you think it's something else?

myweechickens · 07/05/2019 09:58

Sorry I think you’ve misunderstood me. I’m checking the poo now that she and the rest of the household have had treatment. I did check her when the itching first started but seen nothing! So we saw the gp who thought it was something fungal (she also examined dd) so we took her advise and used the cream

You really don't need to check her poo. In a few days the worms will starve to death. You don't need to check.

Just treat again 2 weeks after, don't forget and keep some worm stuff in the cupboard for the future.

Your GP probably could do with reminding that itchy bums in young kids are probably worms before thinking it's anything else.

myweechickens · 07/05/2019 10:01

Said worm which didn’t look like it was moving till I touched it was found weeks after the itching started. After treating my daughter for what the GP thought was a fungal thing and there is still itching, yes my anxiety is through the roof, as I’m sure yours would be too if you’d already checked for worms time and time again and treated for constipation and fungal infection before seeing anything! I’ve never saw them before, and I only saw one. I’ve read posts where people are saying their children’s backsides are jumping so one seems like she’s either got off lightly, or that it’s not worms.

Over, one dose today, another in 2 weeks. Wash bedding, pj's etc. Clean nails and watch out for yourself, I picked them up from goodness knows where (not my teenage kids), probably my nephew

OP, threadworms don't (or rarely) show up in poo.

The females come out of the bum, usually at night, and lay their eggs around the anus. Hence the itching.
Some people can spot the female worms with a torch light during the night.

But the best bet for detection is to use some clear tape and use it around the anus when it's itching. Stick it on the side of a glass bottle, and they should be able to transfer it to a microscope glass and send it to be checked in the lab for eggs.

Like this: medlineplus.gov/ency/article/003452.htm

As it seems that she had threadworms, you'll all should be treated again 2 weeks later. Possibly even a third time. According to your OP, now should be the time for a second dose of Ovex, I think.
