Tick, antibiotics, rash

Two weeks ago we came back from Scotland on holiday and discovered a tick bite on my 5 yo ds. Saw GP who took it v seriously and she prescribed 3 weeks of amoxicillin.

He has been on the amoxicillin for nearly two weeks now and today has a red rash on his cheeks and ears, and less of a rash on his arms and tummy.....he is fine in himself.....

Not sure if this is a side effect of the antibiotics or something else connected to Lyme disease .... but it's not a bullseye rash just red spots. Typically it's happened on a bank hol weekend which was the same as the initial drama two weeks ago? Should I continue to give the anti biotics??

I would go to your local walk-in centre if I was you to get advice. Amoxicillin can quite often cause a rash but given the tick bite and potential Lyme Disease, I'd want to get it checked out.

It might well be unrelated. A red rash on cheeks and upper arms could be slapped cheek (parvovirus b19).

Two weeks into the course of antibiotics it is unlikely to be a reaction to those, I wouldn't stop them without taking medical advice first.

I’m really surprised that a GP prescribed antibiotics just because your son had a tick bite. I live in the countryside and it’s part of life that we check for ticks after walking. We regularly remove them and always watch out for possible indications of lymes. I asked our GP about antibiotics once and was told they were not necessary without symptoms and I have since learnt that my dcs would always be on antibiotics if this was the case! My DH has one in a delicate area last year - which he had a little difficulty removing!

Well like I say the GP seemed to take it very seriously....she rang the infectious diseases dept at the local hospital and took advice from them.

I think she was extra cautious because we couldn't be certain how long the tick had been there....I am fairly sure it had been in for 24 hours as I think any longer and we'd have noticed it when he was in the bath but we couldn't be sure.

The dr at the walk in said to continue with the antibiotics but to go back if rash gets worse and or he seconds unwell.
