My two (almost three) year old has decided that he will no longer poo. We had no issues when he was in nappies at all, but since toilet training, he would become constipated, and then cry when he pooped etc.

He has been to get movicol last night, it hasn’t had much effect yet obviously.

Today, he’s screamed crying with constipation all day. He’s actively attempting to hold his poo in still, and God knows how when he’s had 4 sachets of movicol. He’s leaked over flow everywhere, underwear, the sofa, the floor.

I’ve just lost my rag, shouted at him and told him Jean not allowed any treats until he poos. I know this is the worst thing I could do, I’m 6 months pregnanct and knackered and just became a bit of a dick.

What do I do now? I fear my reaction has made it miles worse. After I shouted he asked to go to bed (he decided to wake up at 4am) and he’s fast asleep now so I can’t even apologise to him.

Oh wow, toilet training was in my experience not something that I could fix quickly and remember he is 2!

Try lots of encouragement to sit on the toilet, keep a bottle if bubbles to blow when you feel he wants a poo, he can't blow bubbles and withhold simultaneously! Also try looking at poo goes to pooland books.....

My 6 yr old declined movicol as it gave him no bowel control and we used lactulose to clear constipation when needed....

We all lose our temper sometimes but you are right that giving him any more negative associations with this issue won't make him go.

It's so important to get on top of this situation now as my teenage son has had chronic constipation and overflow issues most of his life and I don't remember when it started but I don't think he was this young. Once it sets in as a issue in later childhood it's very difficult to resolve.

Have u tried a reward system? Or sitting and reading to your child while he's on the toilet. Letting him watch you go then saying it's his turn even? Give loads of extra fluids as movicol draws fluid into the bowel.

Hope you find something that helps.

Have you tried Mr Poo goes to Pooland? I had success with that with both of mine. I think there is also an app now.
I would sit with mine and read books. Blow bubbles, watch tv. Tummy massage - backwards c can also help.
Don’t worry you haven’t messed up. He’s only 2. And you are tired. When he wakes up make a new start.
I went back to nappies with one of mine. It took the pressure off. It was against all the advice. But nothing else worked. Didn’t need them for long and then the potty training was a breeze.
