My grandson is in his first year at Uni and seems to be doing very well. 3weeks ago whilst his mother was away with a school trip I received a text from him saying "I cannot do this any more I am going home and not going back to Uni" I managed to get to him at home where he told me he just panicked, he had not been sleeping well, was tired, he just saw all these people and just wanted to run away. We have known since a baby he has Social Anxiety issues but thought he was overcoming them. Doctor has prescribed Sertraline. g,son seems to think this is a magic switch that will help his issues around people. We are not so sure and feel he may need other, non medicinal, help for longer term relief. Would be grateful for any experiences others may have had

Hi OP the uni should have support services available where your grandson can hopefully access some counselling etc. It’s also worth looking on the main Mind website.
Hope things start to ease for him soon.

My ds 19 suffers from them. He had some counselling and was on sertraline for maybe 6-8 months but seems to be managing a bit better now, although he did say last week he was waking depressed but the depression was lifting as the day went on.

Thanks for this DiaryofWimpyMumm. Did your Ds find counselling worked for him? Was it CBT?

No it was just talk therapy through CAMHS it went over a period of 6 months and I went along too. I think having someone to talk through his feelings really helped.
