It started when he was about 6m this wheezing and he's happy with it but he sleeps terrible because obviously he can't breathe entirely properly. He keeps getting coughs colds on top of it. Doc thinks it was broncholitis to start with and he's just never been able to shift it? His breathing is labourerd but his chest ok. I go to the docs every two weeks just to keep them informed with him. Been to the hospital and seen paediatric respiratory consultant but they all seem unworried about it... which is ok and reassuring but I've wondered if it's allergies etc... it did start around 6months when I introduced formula and weaning but he has no skin or stomach problems so that doesn't add up.... we have two dogs and house is probably dusty.... There must be something causing this and it continuing for so long and I need to find out what! It just doesn't get any worse or any better... night or day. Anyone had similar?

Hello,
I would strongly advise in your case that you pester your GP until you get a referral to one of the major children’s hospitals, such as GOSH.
Fundamentally it is not normal to just have a child that wheezes for no real reason. GPs and local hospital paediatricians are used to dealing with the main stream and not looking for answers to more complex problems.
It may be something and equally it may be nothing but it does merit a thorough investigation.....my youngest child was a ‘happy wheezer’ for 7 months, according to my local hospital and GP-this was until I saw a major London hospital consultant and after various MRIs it was discovered that he had a severely compressed bronchus to his main lung that was slowly being strangled by his artery wrapped around it where it shouldn’t have been.
I was naive then, and quick to think that drs knew all the answers.....I realised very shortly afterwards that actually as parents we have to push for the answers, and keep pushing until there is a definite diagnosis. In my son’s case it could have had a fatal outcome, and even 6 years later we still live with the ramifications.
This isn’t to scare you, just to advise to keep pushing for answers!

Crikey ok. It has been a long time now. So can any doctor refer to GOSH?

How old was your son at the time and was he full term when born etc?

Hello,
Please don’t be too alarmed. As I said, I think local hospitals are just often not used to investigating the slightly unusual-and at the very least, it does sound like it warrants proper investigation.
My son had many x-rays at the local hospital, but it took an MRI scan/an MLB at a major London children’s hospital, to show what the actual problems were.
My son was born at term via c-sec. We were in and out of the drs and local hospital pretty much from a few days after he was born- they discovered he had a VSD in his heart at a few days old, he was always a ‘happy wheezer’ from the first month after his birth and this continued until they discovered his major problems quite by chance after a heart scan at 7 months old by the London hospital consultant.
In your case I would push your GP for a respiratory appointment at your closest large children’s hospital so that they can check in case there is an underlined cause to the wheezing.

Can I hijack and ask what doctors say about the wheezing? Ds2 has one cold turn into the next one without ever getting totally well in between. You can feel when you put a hand on his back like a raspy/rattly sound. Last 3 times the doctors have said it is just colds and mucus high up but not on the lungs.

Frenchfancies · 21/04/2019 08:41

So with mine they thought it was broncholitis at first but that's only meant to last couple of weeks so because he then got ckn pox and he has had a cough/cold one after the like yours without a break they say his immune system is low and he's just having a bad tome 🤷🏼‍♀️

And same about the mucus with us. Apparently 'not on his chest'. We did try antibiotics, tried steroids, drops that hmgo up his nose, he's had asthma pumps ..., but nothing made any difference. They've also said they noticed a lot of colds hanging around a lot longer this winter but I don't think it's just that with him. I thought maybe an allergy but health visitor said he would have skin or tummy issues too.
