Any idea what this is?

Hi

Does anybody recognise this?

I took my son to the doctor about a month ago after he'd had it for a few weeks. I didn't take him sooner as I thought it was the eczema he had a toddler recurring and had been applying his cream.

When it didn't go away someone suggested that it may be ringworm so I took him straight to the doctor. The doctor was unsure so prescribed Daktacort. We have been applying it twice daily for weeks and if anything it's got worse. Also been applying Cetraben moisturiser.

I've tried to get another doctors appointment but cannot get one for 2 weeks.

Any ideas what it might be and what I can do? He says it hurts and is itchy. The redder ones feel quite warm to the touch too.

Thanks in advance

It's not that common - I was misdiagnosed by a few different GPs and before finally seeing a GP with an interest in dermatology i had it a few years ago and it was really painful! Had mild eczema as a child and then it came back with a vengeance as discord eczema in my late teens.

I was prescribed Doublebase gel and applying that was excruciating, so be careful what you're applying to it. I found oil-based ointments much more soothing. After a few weeks of strong steroid ointment (mometasone, aka Elocon) it cleared up and hasnt been back since. I was also given a sedating antihistamine to take at night (itching/pain made it hard to sleep, and antihistamine stopped itching so much)

Has your son seen the doctor again now?

That is really helpful, thank you.

He has an appointment on Wednesday. We had a holiday booked and the only appointment they had was when we were away so had to wait longer than normal. I couldn't take his normal cream on the plane due to the size of the tub so brought a small tube of Cetraben and that seemed to help.

Will see what the doctor says.
