Should I take her back to the doctors?

Hi all. On Thursday night my one year old came down with a fever and extreme tiredness- she was only awake for a few hours total over the weekend, will smile and interact with us but won’t go and play or toddle around like normal. She’s had a cough for weeks that made her throw up on Sunday night and she also developed a rash covering her head to toe on Sunday but the fever went away.

My partner took her to the doctor on Monday and they said it’s a virus and there’s nothing to do but keep her hydrated and wait for it to pass. Since then she’s coughed so hard she’s thrown up both nights, still covered in a rash, still not eating and spending most of her time asleep or just cuddled in to us not doing anything. I really hate seeing her like this, she’s just not herself at all. I’m debating whether to take her back tomorrow or if I’ll just be wasting their time and they’ll say the same thing again?

Yes. If you’re concerned, take her back. If you’re really concerned, call out-of-hours (in England it’s 111).
They may say the same again, but a doctor worth their salt would rather check a child than risk missing something serious.
Hope she’s feeling better.

I would ring 111 now.

Sounds viral to me, especially if the fever has gone within 5 days and the rash came towards the middle of the virus rather than the 1st day, plus she has upper respiratory symptoms of the cough - all indicators of a viral infection. Eating is not that important when they are sick, offer her little and often of her favourite foods rather than full on meal 3x a day. As long as she is drinking well her and the rash is non blanching (which since a gp has saw it I'm assuming it is!) then she will recover from this. The coughing until puking is very common as small children have sensitive gag reflexes and you can expect a lot of cough/pukes over the next few years unfortunately. If she has a snotty nose you can try saline spray up it to loosen the gunk, or sitting with her in a hot steamy bathroom. If the cough seems to cause her any difficulty with breathing or wheezing that is the only reason I would see NHS again if it were me.

How is she this morning?

riotlady · 10/04/2019 09:12

Thanks everyone. She seems a little bit brighter this morning and ate a little bit of toast so I’m hoping this means shes on the mend! Will hold off on docs for now

I'm glad she's perked up, sounds like the worst of it should be over and she'll hopefully improve slowly each day.
