Hard lump behind ear

Hi,

Looking for some reassurance.

My nine year old daughter just showed me a lump behind her right ear. It’s on the bone about half way behind her ear and it’s rock hard. It doesn’t hurt her and she has no memory of knocking herself. She has no idea how long it has been there.

Other than a slight cold, she is in good health. I wondered about a lymph node, but this is hard and doesn’t move.

I’m making her appointment with the GP but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

My sister had a hard cyst removed from on the bone behind her ear at about 12-13yrs old. Hers just appeared almost overnight, didn't cause her any pain or problems but our GP referred her to get it removed.
Hers turned out to be nothing sinister and you can't even see a scar now.

People can get harmless cysts. I don't know why, either.

Thanks both. Am trying not to worry too much!

There are a load of reasons lumps can appear in the body. The vast majority are no cause for alarm. It's good you're getting it checked, but I wouldn't worry.

Hi @Stygimoloch
Did you find out what this was? Hope everything was okay. I have similar now and really worried.

Hi @RainOnMee the doctor wasn’t worried at all. Said it was most likely a gland or a small cyst. I still don’t know which but in the weeks afterwards it definitely got smaller. It’s still there as a tiny lump but it doesn’t bother her and I’m not worried about it anymore.

Hope this helps reassure you a little.
