Is this concerning ?

I keep going AandE and GP and going back home with them saying it’s not serious yet that I no longer know when to bother them again.

My 14 month old had serious fever for 5 days, only today did it seem to settle (40degrees controlled by meds all along). He hasn’t been wetting enough nappies even though his hydration isn’t bad.

He has last night screamed his head off all night for reasons I can’t understand. He has been refusing to eat so I feed him small amounts and just breastfeed as much as he wants.

He has been extremely not himself. Sometimes clumsy. His hands and feet are certainly cold but I am keeping him in underwear due to fever.

And today he developed a rash on neck and back. I did the glass test to check for meningitis and the rash disappeared under the glass so that was good.

What else shall I do ?

He has also been insecure wanting to sleep on my lap and cuddle all day. Wants to cuddle a very specific way which isn’t his nature

Sounds to me like he is poorly. The only thing which sounds a bit concerning is the clumsiness but he’s probably exhausted. Are you sure he’s being clumsy or maybe you’re a bit anxious and reading too much into things?

mclaleli · 03/04/2019 19:46

You keep going to A&E and the GP?

How many times has your DC been seen?

scoobyloobyloo · 03/04/2019 19:46

Also - any spots on hands/feet/mouth? My girls were very unsettled when they had HF&M

scoobyloobyloo · 03/04/2019 19:47

Please don’t start hammering OP for using the NHS, it’s not fair.

Samind · 03/04/2019 19:47

Is he still teething? Have you tried any recent new products that he could be allergic too? Have you been eating anything that mightn't agree with him. Sorry you're having this trouble. Don't know what to suggest.

mclaleli · 03/04/2019 19:49

Please don't assume I'm 'hammering' anyone. I simply was asking how many times the child had been seen, because, you know, it could be relevant to replies.

scoobyloobyloo · 03/04/2019 19:50

Glad you’re not - I just see it a lot here and it’s not what’s needed.

As you were Grin

He’s probably got a virus. If he’s been seen by GP and A&E and sent home then I’d not keep going repeatedly unless he got worse. There’s not a lot they can do. Encourage fluids, breastfeeding will be helping, calpol/ibuprofen if needed, lots of rest. It’s horrible when they’re properly poorly but if the fever is settling that’s something at least.

I could have written this about my DD just last week. Very similar symptoms and I went to the Gp twice to be told it was a viral infection (plus teething by the looks of it). The doctor seemed to be right. She is now back to herself. This was after 4 days of constant calpol to try to help with her temp which seemed to do nothing.

I can only say that YOU know your own child. I was lucky the viral infection was all it was but that ISNT to say that it's the same thing.

If your gut feels wrong then I'd go back to the GP again. Good luck Thanks

Gem222w · 03/04/2019 20:55

When my DD was almost 12 months she was ill with a high temp and no obvious sign of infection and didn't seem to be getting better. I went to the GP and was told a virus. Later that night she had rapid breathing, high temp and uncontrollable crying. I called 111 who sent an ambulance. At A&E we tried for a few hours to get a urine sample but couldn't get one, her temp came down so they sent us home. The next day she seemed to be getting a little better. The following day I went back to the GP as she looked worse again and was referred to the Children's assessment unit at our local hospital as she didn't like the sound of her breathing. They checked her out and again we were sent home with suspected viral infection but with a 24 hour call back card if she got worse. That night her temp dropped a lot lower than it had been for the last 4 days. The next morning she was lethargic and lips a little blue so dashed to A&E in the car as 5 mins away. They had her on oxygen and taking bloods within 2 mins of walking through the door.

She had sepsis. They located the infection as an upper urine infection so was on IV antibiotics and had a kidney scan. I was a nightmare parent and the nurses were fed up of the sight of me and my constant temperature checks. But I dread to think what the outcome would have been if I'd have let the 'virus' ride out.

Sometimes it is a virus but sometimes it isn't. Trust your instincts. If you think your child isn't getting better then I would go back.

greenlynx · 03/04/2019 21:00

Did they check him for ear infection?
It sounds to much for a virus so I would go back.

greenlynx · 03/04/2019 21:06

Too much

SchoolOfLife2 · 04/04/2019 00:51

Thanks everyone. Just came back from AandE after he developed a sudden rash and it has been confirmed that the high fever and rash are caused by roseola virus which he is now recovering from and so meningitis and measles all ruled out. Thanks a lot

Gem... oh gosh this sounds really testing!.. your poor DD. I feel like my mind was heading that direction because of everything I heard about how late they sometimes detect sepsis.. it must have been horrific. I hope things turned out ok for her.

Glad your little one is doing ok OP.

TBF - Mclaleli you've got previous form for being a bit arsey and your post totally sounds like you were about to give OP a roasting and got called out.

Try coming in on conversations in a more positive angle - it might stop some of the issues you had on the previous thread.

FFS. I'm the one being arsey? Ok.

Literally did nothing.
