Hi ladies.
My baby will be 8 weeks on Thursday and weighs just over 12lbs already and he's caught my cold Sad he has a blocked nose, keeps coughing and sneezing. If it's anything like my cold I know mine also started with an awful sore throat. His temperature is fine (35.5c) but just wondering if it'd be ok/ advised to give him 2.5ml of Calpol just to make it a bit more bearable for him? FTM so no clue about this stuff!
Thank you x

Does your baby appear to be in pain? If not I wouldn't give paracetamol. Snuffle baby and saline drops up the nose are great to help with the cold, and if you have a humidifier that might help (if not then some boiled water in the room with a little bit of snuffle baby in it will help (it's like a baby version of Vicks).
If you are worried see your GP as baby's have tiny air pipes and so are more prone to wheezing. When my baby needed pain relief at that age I was given a liquid paracetamol but not Calpol as was told not to use under 12 weeks.
Hope you and baby feel better soon.

@BuzzLightyear1 Thank you. He seems ok in himself actually just a little bit gimpy earlier (I'm sure tonight will be a different story)! Thanks for your advice. I'll pop out and try snuffle baby as I've heard many good things about it. Thanks again! X

Calpol is only pain relief, it won't help with a blocked nose, coughing or sneezing.

DH has previously said to give DC1 calpol when he had been sick but was otherwise fine. It took a long time to convince him that calpol is not a magical medicine to be given at the slightest hint of illness or knee bump. Just for pain like teething or a headache.

Have you got an aspirator? Like a little silicone bulb to suck the snot out of his nose. Or a Nose Frida which is similar but trickier to use.

Be careful that he doesn't accidentally rub the snot in his eye, doing that caused several gunky eyes with DC1 before we realised what he was doing.

I definitely recommend snuffle baby vapour rub! The pharmacist recommended it to us and it helped my sons chest so much when he was a little baby Smile.

Confusedbeetle · 02/04/2019 15:13

No please dont give calpol. If he can feed then just carry on as normal. If he is totally bunged up get some salt nose drops from the pharmacy. Let nature take its course just help him if he struggles to feed. Sucking out the snot is not a great idea

Thanks everyone. I won't be giving Calpol. He's feeding normally and giving me some smiles so I'll see how things go!
Thanks x

Liquid paracetamol and calpol are the same thing. Confused

BuzzLightyear1 · 02/04/2019 21:10

Yes I thought so too, but they can alter the strength and dosage to suit very young babies if it is necessary.

BasilBrushes · 02/04/2019 21:46

Sort of. It comes in two different strengths depending on the brand. In hospital we base it on weight, otherwise you just follow whatever it says on the bottle. Calpol do a vaccination dose.
