Really hoping someone can help us Sad

So my five year old son started complaining of stomach pain just over a week ago. He was mainly ok for the first few days, still went to the park and eat etc, but would cry at night sometimes because of the pain.

Took him to the GP. Sent away with sachets for constipation.

Then the next two days, pooing as normal but still in pain. Crying out with it. Back to GP - told he was fine and that they didn't know what was wrong.

Then when he was collected from school the next day refused to walk, vomited, in pain again so a call to 111 and a trip to clinic. Obs checked and sent home again.

Worse pain yesterday, more vomiting, trip to main hospital paediatric unit. Seen by a senior doc who said he was fine, ride it out.

Today he's still in agony and not really eating. Had one bite of toast this afternoon and then sick again.

One weird thing. He seems ok in the morning and it gets gradually worse through the day.

I'm at my wits end seeing him in so much pain - has anyone got any advice?

Thank you everyone.

Today has been a good day - no complaints of pain at all. I'm going to send him to school tomorrow and see what happens.

@Jubba that sounds awful! If the pain returns we are straight back to the go with a list of things I want checked.

I was just going to post this same illness! My dd has had it a week and a half now. Pretty normal until about 3-4pm and it’s constant crying, feeling sick, etc
She doesn’t have a temp, sleeps through the night, has a normal appetite until about 3-4pm. I can’t understand it. She did have a tummy ache too.

@Realitea Its awful isn't it. Luckily my DS has been ok again for a few days.

Perhaps it was a weird virus? Perhaps he was worried about something and isn't anymore? It's so strange and we still don't really know.

It is baffling and I feel quite bad I haven’t taken her to the doctor yet but there’s no temperature and she’s pretty normal in the morning. She was asking when we could go swimming earlier but then by 4 she was crying and feeling sick and asleep by 6. It must be a weird virus or anxiety. If it’s still happening Monday I’ll definitely take her. How long did it last for your ds? Nearly two weeks?

Its not unheard of for severely constipated/impacted children to end up vomiting because there is no down and out route. They also lose appetite. GPs are not very good at diagnosing it either. And it is not reliable to palpate the abdomen to check. Constipated kids still poo, its about the type and frequency. A few sachets will not sort out severe impaction.

Keep a poo record over next few days, ( type and time) look up Bristol stool chart. If you go back ask specifically for them to rule out fecal impaction

Realitea · 05/04/2019 21:30

I spoke to a pharmacist earlier today about impactation as that’s all I could think of it being.
Also reading about chronic appendicitis now and worrying!
Hopefully my dd has the same weird virus as the the OP’s ds had.

Could the laxatives have been causing some of the pain. My DD has a kidney condition and when she was constipated we gave her laxatives but she carried on complaining of the pain so we continued with the laxatives almost stuck in a cycle. It was only when we ran out for a couple of days and she didn't have any that we realised it was the laxatives causing the cramping! Although I realise your DS was in pain before hand. Glad he seems better anyway.

MadeInCornwallx3 · 05/04/2019 22:37

My Ds had it for about a week @Realitea .

We only did a couple of sachets of the laxative as it quite clearly wasn't that and they just prescribed them as a first port of call.

It honestly was so strange but he was sent away from the GP and hospital twice with no one being any the wiser as to what was causing it. He definitely was in a lot of pain though and not himself, plus the vomiting.

Fingers crossed for you @Realitea it improves - do visit a GP though as they said to me there are tons of things that cause abdominal pain and it's good to rule out anything serious.

Thank you - I’ll see how she is tomorrow and maybe see the out of hours GP

Abdominal migraine?

Realitea · 06/04/2019 21:07

I just got back from the doctor and they said it’s most likely abdominal migraine. 67chevvy you’re on the ball today!
