8yo's adult front tooth not coming through - anyone else had this?

Ds turned 8 in Jan and lost his two front teeth last Oct. One has come through fully now but there is no sign of the other.

He saw an orthodontist last month who said they can sometimes take six months to come through, and to visit our dentist in the summer holidays if it hasn't made an appearance by then.

But I'm starting to worry and wondered if anyone else had any experience of this please? He said there is a way of making an incision in the gum and forcing the tooth down, but it doesn't sound too pleasant! Ds is getting so self conscious bless him, and it's affecting his diction and confidence.

Have they xrayed to see if the tooth is there?

MontyBowJangles · 26/03/2019 21:27

No, no x-ray yet. Do you think I should ask the dentist to do one/chase as it's approaching six months?

Yes, my 7 year old has been without 2 front teeth for more than 6 months. They've just started to come through and it was a bit if a relief I'll admit

dementedpixie · 26/03/2019 21:29

Is he due a dental appointment? No harm in asking

GarthFunkel · 26/03/2019 21:33

We had this with DC, orthodontist did a quick xray and the teeth were there. Usual dentist was more a wait and see guy.

My daughters teeth have come through but almost none of the other teeth will come out so she has both her old front teeth and the new ones =/

BrandyMyLove · 26/03/2019 22:31

I had this when I was little. Eventually had an X-ray and turns out I have something called hypodontia. The tooth wasn't there, it never was! I now have a bridge and hopefully an implant one day :) I'm sure it's just a slow growing tooth but might be worth the X-ray if you're waiting much longer...

MontyBowJangles · 27/03/2019 22:45

@Seekingwellness six months is a long time isn't it? He's getting fed up not being able to just pick up an apple and bite it, and is so self conscious about his toothy grin and slightly off diction.

Not due a check up til June/July but I may try and get him in sooner for peace of mind.

Definitely! Now that they're coming through it looks wierd as I'm so used to her being gappy

Hope your DC's teeth make an appearance soon for you

ThankGoodnessItsWineOclock · 28/03/2019 09:36

DS has been gappy in the front for over 6 months! But the teeth are there! Just coming v slowly! If you can't see then at all, yes I'd ask for an x-ray Smile

MontyBowJangles · 28/03/2019 12:24

Thanks everyone - have booked him in for an x-ray next week Smile

Yes, my 11 year old had surgery late last year to expose a tooth that had failed emerge. It was embedded high up under her gum. The surgery was quite alarming and she had large thick stitches in her gum afterwards. She is to begin orthodontic treatment in the next few months to make space for the tooth and bring it down in to place. A long road of treatment that I expect will be quite painful at times.

My DS is missing seven adult teeth. He’s 12 and we only knew for sure a year ago. Dentists like to wait and see I think because as the child gets older the hidden adult teeth calcify. Sometimes they don’t show up in x rays because they haven’t calcified yet - it’s the calcium that shows in x rays.

It’s fairly common to miss some teeth but I think if he’s lost the baby ones it’s more than likely there- it’s the adult teeth that push the baby ones out (DS has some baby teeth left where no adult knee were pushing them out - the specialist said sometimes these can actually last until your in your fifties if looked after )

yiskasha · 28/03/2019 12:40

I had this. They did an x ray and it was coming through at an angle. Took the tooth out thinking it would come down on its own, but it didn't. Ended up having braces for about four years and it did eventually come down by itself.

redredrobins · 28/03/2019 17:14

My DC had only 3 baby front teeth and now as an adult just 2 front teeth, there were no hidden teeth in gum. We took DC to orthodontist and with treatment with braces is now an adult with 2 front teeth and no gap! It is not particularly noticeable and has given no problems since treatment. DC is quite proud to be a bit different. So if there are no teeth in gum after xray please don't worry too much.

redredrobins · 28/03/2019 17:16

Just to add, how often do you find yourself counting other peoples teeth! People just assume everybody is the same. Smile

MontyBowJangles · 28/03/2019 18:03

Thanks @redredrobins for the reassurance after the scary stories! I'm really hoping he doesn't have to have surgery or braces Sad

My DC was just braces, no different to their friends who had teeth that were a little wonky, no surgery necessary
But do get an x ray as soon as you can, then you will know were you stand..

cptartapp · 28/03/2019 18:23

My nephew is missing two front adult teeth, he's 15 now and in a complicated process of braces. They're now talking bone grafts from the hip!

Chattycatty · 28/03/2019 18:27

My 8ur old had no front teeth for 9 months. They are very slow to appear everytime
