Hi, I'm not sure if anyone is awake but I'm hoping someone will be able to help! I am currently awake with me 3 year old who has a temperature of 38.9. She fell asleep with the usual cold symptoms alongside a cough but then woke up at 1am with a temp. I gave her calpol before she slept at 7 and another dose at around 1.30. But the temp hasn't gone down but has seems to be going up. I know the guidelines say no to nurofen on an empty stomach but I'm struggling to bring it down. I've done the clothes off etc and still no help. Any advice on this out there??
Thank you.

Put the Nurofen in a bit of milk?

TeeBee · 19/03/2019 03:03

Nurofen won't do much for reducing temperature anyway. Calpol is better. Isn't she due another dose?

Sorry, just realised you gave a dose at 1.30. Cold wet flannels?

Ibuprofen I'd much better than carpool for temperatures. A few doses on an empty stomach are fine. It's when it's being taken for prolonged periods on and empty stomach it might cause a problem.

Oh wow I wasn't expecting any replies was just hoping! But thanks for getting back to me. Yes she's not due another dose until at least 5.30 and that's feeling really far away right now. I just thought the Nurofen would be quicker at bringing the temp down. She's awake too which obviously isn't helping her, I've been trying to get her back to sleep this whole time with no luck!

You can give them both together too and then alternate them if she's really poorly. Hope you managed a bit of sleep Flowers

That’s absolute rubbish. One of the things nurofen does is help bring down a temperature. You may find it not as helpful of calpol but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t help. I always find my children respond better to nurofen.

Hi all, I ended up going to the gp this afternoon as her temp didn't go below 39 since I last posted. The gp said it was fine to give a dose on an empty stomach as a one off as long as it wasn't a regular occurrence. I do find nurofen really helps to bring down the temp quicker than calpol hence the original question. When I have given it during the day it has helped but obviously at night everything is so much worse so hopefully tonight will be better night!
