Septicaemia

My 2 year old dd became really unwell whilst on antibiotics for tonsilitis. We called 111 who sent an ambulance. On admission to hospital I noticed the petechial rash under her arm which then started to spread. Blood tests confirmed septicaemia and she has been treated with IV antibiotics. We have had outstanding care, it has been caught so early and we've been really lucky. Dd has rallied and seems much better in herself, if a little tired. We've been allowed home and have to return to tomorrow for one last dose of antibiotics (that will be the 5th dose). Does anyone have any experience of recovery post septicaemia? How long should she stay away from nursery for? Is she likely to need more sleep and is there anything I should look out for? My dad had sepsis in August and he is only just feeling back to normal so Im just a little worried.

My niece had sepsis when she was two which progressed into septic shock, she’s now 12 and recovered very quickly and has never had any problems since. It sounds like they caught your little girl really early before anything progressed to a level where any lasting damage would arise, septic shock for example is the next stage when the organs start being attacked and thank fully she didn’t have this stage.

I would’ve thought the recovery from this would be like from any other severe infection so I’d use your mummy instincts and keep her with you until you feel she’s fully recovered, recovery times with things like this vary massively due to age/severity of infection etc.

Definately talk to the doctor/GP and get some follow up advise on this, even calling the ward she was in they should be able to help you.

She’s so lucky she’s got such great parents watching her and that you got her help so quickly. I hope she feels better soon Flowers

Ps. Remember that Septicemia and Sepsis are not the same thing, so your father had Sepsis which is more serious, and ever. More so in the elderly, which is why it’s taken him so long to recover. If your little girl had septicemia this didn’t get a chance to progress to sepsis so she will recover much quicker and shouldn’t have any lasting problems from this once she’s recovered x
