Dry face skin - coconut oil or aveeno

Hi, our 4 month old and 5 year old both have dry skin on face. 5 year old particularly gets red skin after swimming. GP has told us to use moisturiser before and after swimming. We r using child's farm moisturiser but not much better. Am putting little vaseline before swimming but maybe not putting enough.

Our 4 month old also has dry cheeks and GP told us "these days everybody recommends coconut oil".

I have heard aveeno baby products are good but then also heard coconut oil is good.

Any suggestions please? Either raw, organic coconut oil or aveeno baby product or something else? Any other tips for dry skin after swimming..

Many thanks in advance..

Thanks

I get the organic coconut oil from Tesco. For myself I found it ok on body but a bit heavy for entire face, for dry patches though fine. I use almond oil on face. Get it from Holland & Barrett.

Coconut oil isn't recommended for facial skin. I'd use a basic emollient cream, one with a fat content of at least 50%, that's what I use for my children (one with atopic skin, and the other with occasional dry skin). Not in the UK though so can't recommend brands but I'd ask a pharmacist, they would be able to recommend.

Highly recommend getting a tube of "double base" gel from any pharmacy. Excellent stuff. So many moisturisers - even those labelled "sensitive" and aimed specifically at children - are perfumed and just not sensitive enough. Especially for babies.

I use the aveno oat moisturiser and it's ace.

I get confused by emollients because some of them seem to be 'drying creams' so don't get how they help?

I use Aveeno for my eczema and dry skin, and love it.

Something to note OP is the difference between occlusives (Vaseline, most oils) and emollients (Aveeno, Diprobase, etc): occlusives provide a protective outer layer for the skin, so they should go onto damp skin, not dry - or they'll just sit on top of the dryness!

10 out of 10 here for Aveeno

Something suitable for eczema and it doesn't need to be expensive - aqueous cream, diprobase, epaderm...
