Unbalanced

I've not been about on here lately and have forgotten my previous log in details but could do with some advice/reassurance about DD6.
About 3 and a half weeks ago she got up in the morning and it appeared like she was drunk, staggering, couldn't stand up straight and still, bumping into walls etc. At this point she also had a bit of a cold. Took her to the doctors who diagnosed a slight upper respiratory infection and prescribed antibiotics.
One week later, antibiotics finished, she was slightly less unbalanced but still definitely wobbly, took her back to doctors (saw a different doctor) who said she appeared dehydrated (she doesn't drink a lot) and to up her fluids.
After that weekend, ensuring she had loads of fluids, still struggling, I picked her up from school to be told by the teacher she kept falling off her chair, they were querying dyspraxia.
So back to doctors (different doctor again) who watched her walk, run and try to walk with one foot in front of other (like sobriety test). He thought it was just a growth spurt (she has grown 3cm since xmas) and that she was struggling because her feet were so big (size 1.5) and to come back for a review at the end of this month.
She has improved but she is still not right. She is more unbalanced in the morning, especially if she is woken up, not so bad if she wakes up herself. She also looks more unbalanced when walking but can run/skip absolutely fine.
She has no other symptoms.
The reason I'm panicking now is because MIL has suggested I get her referred for a scan, she apparently thinks it's a brain tumour!!
Any advice/reassurance welcome.

Did any of the doctors check her ears, could be an ear infection?
If the ear drums popped it can take weeks to fully heal.

I would go back to the gp if you're not happy, could be ears but could be something neurological as well....

piglet3 · 12/03/2019 12:35

Ears have been checked. We have been back to doctors today. Watching her walk doctor said she is toe walking. He's put this down to the massive growth spurt she has had and her bones growing too fast for her muscles. He's referred her to paediatric orthopaedics for them to assess if she needs physio/braces etc.

But toe walking and growth spurts don't make you keep falling off your chair! I feel you're being fobbed off a bit and would want an urgent referral for a neurological opinion. Good luck!

piglet3 · 12/03/2019 15:22

The falling off the chair has stopped now and main "symptom" is that she is walking in an uncoordinated way.
I have now seen 4 different doctors who all insist it is just down to a growth spurt.
None of them think it is anything neurological as I have asked repeatedly. Doctor today had her doing lots of (I assume) neurological tests. touching nose, writing, pointing out which was up, down, behind etc.
She is booked in for an eye test tonight (routine) as well.
I'm struggling as I desperately need to get my anxiety under control and this isn't helping.
How many doctors would need to say the same thing before you believe them?

Well. It's hard. The GP's could be completely correct of course. Maybe you're over worrying. And we can't see your daughter- maybe her symptoms aren't as bad as they sound. But to me, acting drunk and walking into walls doesn't sound like a growth spurt. If you're really worried you could ask for a paediatric referral, or even pay for a private consultation if GP doesn't want to refer. But if it were my child I would prefer a specialists opinion rather than trusting GP. Just thinking about the other thread where a GP continually failed to diagnose type 1 diabetes until the poor girl fell seriously ill.

cestlavielife · 14/03/2019 23:12

Has she seen a paediatrician? Or just go?
Can you take some videos of her walking and then do so again in four weeks to compare?
Then if worsening you can show a neurologist.

minmooch · 17/03/2019 08:30

How is your daughter doing @piglet3

Is she still unbalanced when walking? If she is please press for more tests. Trust your gut instinct and follow it through.
