Hi all, first time posting after my mum told me about mumsnet. I have a 2 year old daughter who is severely constipated. This has been going on for about two months and a month ago the doctor put her on Lactulose which has made NO change, yet they want me to continue using it.(It was a struggle to even get help, the doctor wanted to just send her away even though this is causing her to bleed) I have completely cut out foods that may constipate such as cheese and she is getting wheatabix, brown bread, fresh fruit, beans etc every day, but her poop's are huge, like a grown mans Grin, and they are rock solid.

My question is; is there anything more I can do to help her before I take back to the doctor? Thanks all and sorry for the long post Grin

Go back to the GP and point out that NICE guidelines is to use macrogol (movicol or laxido). Lactulose is a pretty pathetic laxative.

You might find having a look at this website eric.org.uk helpful.

Yes, agree with movicol. You can get a prescription for peadiatric movicol from your doctors. I think the paediatric version is half the strength of the adult one. Think they do chocolate or plain. You mix it with liquid - water, milk and drink it. It really does work.

We have a prescription for my daughter and use it as and when needed. Just remember that everyone is different in terms of how often they poo. DD is 5 and seems to naturally poo every 2-3 days. She also has massive poos, far bigger than you'd expect for her size. That being said she often isn't constipated and passes them ok normally. I think the problem we have is that if she gets a little bit constipated because she then has a massive poo to pass it doesn't take much to make it hard to pass. Google the Bristol stool chart - this defines the perfect poo ShockGrin

Please, please don't let the doctor fob you off. It needs to get sorted ASAP otherwise it can cause long term problems.

Ds got very bunged up at 2 and Movicol was our saviour, it really is miraculous. If you ask your GP for plain sachets (unflavoured) you can just slip it into your dcs juice and once they’ve had it usually takes a few hours to work. Make sure they drink plenty of fluids with it.

Constipation is very serious andhad made our ds life terrible. Movicol is brilliant.

Would totally recommend joining the Facebook group "movicol mummies" I have learnt so much from those wise ones! Like how important it is to do a full disimpaction regime to allow the gut to recover properly.
