Adult teeth missing 😪

Does anyone have experience of this? Known as hypodontia.
We have been referred from the south coast to London.
Just wondering if anyone can provide some positive stories of the likely road ahead.

A child in one of my classes had no adult teeth waiting to come through. As a teen he's finding it embarrassing to have all his small baby teeth in his bigger mouth now he's grown. No adult teeth has meant his baby teeth haven't been pushed out.
He's going to have implants when he's older.

My friend has several baby teeth still as a 43 year old but she had enough adult teeth for it to balance out.

I have four adult premolars missing. Fortunately it is one on each side, top and bottom, so no gaps. And even then I had to have two other premolars removed and braces to fit my adult teeth in (must just have a v tiny head?). It must be very difficult for children if it is lots of teeth or all of them.

I have no experience of no adult teeth being in place but I would suggest you get an appointment with an Oral Surgeon (they specialise in things like dental implants).

I have hypodontia and DD has it too, I was treated at the Royal London as is my daughter now.
A mixture of Maryland Bridges and build ups of baby teeth for me, similar for her she is about half way through her treatment, the treatment there is first class.

I have this as do all five of my children. I am missing 12 adult teeth. I have crowns and bridge work. It’s never been a particular issue tbh.

Marypoppins19 · 02/03/2019 18:15

I’m just wondering how the years before implants will likely look? Worried about School and bullying :(

I'm
Only missing two. One on each parallel side. On the bottom set.

I've never met anyone else who has this! Or even knew it had a name etc

Rolypolypie · 02/03/2019 18:50

I am worried about this for my DD, as I have four baby teeth still (no adult teeth waiting).

She hasn't lost any teeth yet, despite all her classmates losing some.

Marypoppins19 · 02/03/2019 18:59

My dentist wasn’t keen to X-ray until this week and he’s 11. It’s been a huge shock

Dd16 has this, and been under the Eastman dental hospital in London for 12 years. 7 adult teeth missing. She has braces now to create the right spaces for her implants. She has had several extractions under GA for malformed teeth too. Many of the spaces have closed up themselves, so she only needs three implants.

Please dw OP - neither DD nor I have ever been upset about this. It’s just one of those things. And we are lucky enough to live in a country where there is medical care for this.

My only concern is that they don’t do implants until 19/20 when all bone growth has stopped, and her treatment may not be covered by the NHS. Will be pricey...

Marypoppins19 · 02/03/2019 22:08

Thank you for your reply. He seems to have only 4 adults and possible 1 other and then the wisdom teeth so very few at all

I have around 10 adult teeth missing and no wisdom teeth. I had 2 baby teeth missing. It wasn’t really an issue through my teen years, I had a brace which made the gaps more even and the brace had a tooth built into it. I then had bridges and crowns. I had two implants done as an adult because I had to have a further back tooth removed and there weren’t enough other teeth. This was done on the NHS through referral to the dental hospital, even though I was an earning adult at the time. I think it is about clinical need, if it is deemed necessary it can be done on the nhs even though implants aren’t routinely paid for by nhs.

flitwit99 · 05/03/2019 20:01

I have 4 missing but they are quite well spread out so my other teeth just moved around to fill in the gaps.
I know an adult who still has all her baby teeth. She is something of a celebrity because it's supposedly quite rare for them to last this long and not rot. She has chosen not to have any removals or replacements or anything so far. Her choice, good for her, but they do look odd and you do notice.

Anyway, all these anecdotes don't change the fact that it must be shocking to find this news out and it is a worry. Sounds like there will be a lot of dental treatment ahead and even if it is not life changing or threatening it is still a big deal. I would be really upset too. Hope your son is taking the news ok.
