When do I worry about change of bowel movements?

My 13 year old has always had toilet ‘issues’ as he is autistic and used to withhold and often soil. This has got much better over the last year and has been opening his bowels about twice a week which seems to work for him. Toward the end of January he has been going to the toilet between 5-8 times a day.

It started off lots of loose ‘fluffy’ bits. Then would be harder ‘bits’. He was given liquid senna again and this made it worse and give him stomach ache and diarrhoea so was stopped. I took him to the doctors last week and she said he wasn’t impacted at all and stomach felt fine. She ordered a stool sample and said if the results were clear just to book a phone consultation. Today I was told the results are all clear so I’ve booked a phone call for next week.

This is where it gets tricky. After a week of being like this he got a temperature and was tired and I thought must have an infection but this turned into a bad cough and fever went away quite quick. The doctor things there was some sort of infection and he now just has an inflamed bowel....

The trouble is at 13 and autistic I can’t keep looking at his pop every time he goes. He says he’s doing normal poos.... I have no idea if he is. My question is, has anyone any experience of this? If stools were ‘clear’ does that mean all infection, things like bowel cancer (I know I know) etc are not present and it’s simply got to run its course?? This week he’s had a mild temperate And another bad cough but I’m not convinced they are related?

I’d apprecirate any help before I speak to doctors next week?

Tia

Try daily probiotics

Thank you for the link. I did ask the doctor if pro buotics would help and he just said they won’t hurt 🙄 although he isn’t constipated. Will go to health shop later.

It was a doctor who recommended probiotics for my son with sl d asd pro e to constipation. It does help...try a good high dose (ask in health store) for 6 weeks. You can get powder from biocare to add to food or drink

Powder would be good as he won’t take tablets. Can you taste it?

It sounds like he could be constipated and it could be overflow. Harder bits would be old poo starting to pass and ‘diarrhoea’ new poo coming around the old poo. Has there been any recent soiling/diarrhoea?

Inbedbynine · 05/03/2019 15:02

No he’s been checked by 2 seperate doctors, he isn’t constipated so it isn’t back flow or anything. He was put on anti biotics on Sunday for a chest infection, the doctor said that would help the stomach if there was an infection. I’m giving him good bacteria to help.... doctor said wait for the week on anti biotics to see how he is. He’s at home today and he’s been about 5 times.

And no hasn’t been soiling for quite a while so that hasn’t been a problem. It doesn’t appear to be any dirahoea.....
