Head injury-should I be worried?

Hi

My dd fell off a chair earlier today, ironically in a hospital waiting room. It was only a little child’s chair but the floor was hard and she was sort of standing on it, leaning over to get something. She banged her head and cried for a bit but then I gave her some cookies and she stopped crying and ate them. We then went in to see the doctor and she cried the whole way through the appointment but I wasn’t expecting her to be happy because it was a scan of her heart, so likely she would have cried in the appointment anyway. She was then fine afterwards.

This was about 1, at about half 4 she was sick and then again at about half 5. She’s also sort of gagged twice more but there was no sick. She seems okay in herself, was playing inbetween the two sickness episodes. If anything she’s maybe a bit quiet just before the sick/gag and a bit whingy but that could just be time of day. She wouldn’t eat her tea but happily ate a yoghurt and cake and has drunk most of her bedtime milk.

I just don’t know whether to be worried or not. I’m such a worrier anyway that I don’t know if it’s just me thinking too much into it.

She had gastroenteritis 3 weeks ago and she’s not like she was then. We phoned 111 and went to A&E then and I just feel like every time there’s something wrong I’m phoning them. I feel like I’m not a good mum when there’s something wrong because I just panic.

Sorry it’s a long post. Hopefully you can reassure me and give me some advice.

When my son rolled off the bed, the reason 111 sent me to A&E was vomiting. Get it checked, no messing around.

funtimespeople · 26/02/2019 19:58

Does she have a jump on her head from the fall? Is she d enough to tell you how she's feeling?

The rule with head injuries is 1-2 is ok, Any more you need to be seen.

funtimespeople · 26/02/2019 19:59
  • bump
Quartz2208 · 26/02/2019 20:11

i would ring 111

piggie88 · 26/02/2019 20:26

No there’s no bump, not even a mark now. There was a little red mark at the time but not much. She’s only just turned 2 so not able to tell me how she feels.

I had to go to the shop to get formula for our other daughter and she was sick again while I was out, husband says quite a lot. He’s put her to bed but I’m not happy with her being asleep or not where we can see her.

Head injury plus vomiting I'd get her checked over

Kittykat93 · 26/02/2019 20:32

Call 111

Quartz2208 · 26/02/2019 20:36

given the sickness and lack of bump (where did she bump it) definitely get her checked out (a bump is a good sign of external injury)

SaigonSaigon · 26/02/2019 20:37

I would definitely call 111

Queenfreak · 26/02/2019 20:39

Call 111 - they will send you to A&E I should expect.
Vomiting is a warning sign.

funtimespeople · 26/02/2019 20:44

If she's vomited again, it's a A&E job (sorry).

I'm a nurse, dealt with loads of head injuries. Two vomits is the cut off.

FWIW same happened to DS once and we spent the night in A&E, they even did a CT scan. Ended up it was a gastro bug but no other symptoms appeared until the morning. The head injury was just a coincidence.

Consultant was quite cross at being woken up on call but what can you do 🤷‍♂️

JassyRadlett · 26/02/2019 20:45

Agree A&E. When DS1 had concussion, 111 sent us straight there (and offered an ambulance). We managed to go home that night, I think the threshold for being admitted was 4 separate bouts of sickness.

Chosennone · 26/02/2019 20:46

Please ring 111. DD had a real bang that made her cry but was fine 10 mins later. 3 hours later she started vomiting. We were sent to A &E and she had to stay in for 3 days monitoring as she had a barely visible fracture 😪 was totally fine after that

westendshits · 26/02/2019 20:56

Don't phone 111, you need to go to a&e if 3 separate incidences of vomiting.
As per NICE it warrants a CT head scan.
If you're seen by an experienced physician they might over ride that if they are confident, but she definitely needs assessment.
(a&e dr here)

Bigonesmallone3 · 26/02/2019 21:03

They do say any vomiting after a bump to the head needs attention, the lack of bump is worrying too!
I would phone 111

happytobemrsg · 26/02/2019 21:05

The fact that she has been sick means I would go straight to A&E

Callistone · 26/02/2019 21:10

I'd go to hospital. DS fell from the buggy board onto a concrete path the other day and I took him. He was fine but everyone was very kind and said they'd far rather check over a little one to be safe.

piggie88 · 26/02/2019 21:50

Thank you! DH is at A&E with her now. I feel awful that I haven’t gone with her but I’ve stayed at home with the baby.

Hope she's ok op Thanks

Callistone · 27/02/2019 07:02

How is she?

piggie88 · 27/02/2019 09:35

They weren’t too concerned because she was alert and happily playing but kept her in overnight to keep an eye on her. The doctor is happy that she’s fine this morning and will send her home later today if there’s no changes.

OP posts:
Callistone · 27/02/2019 09:57

That's good - I don't think they ever mind checking when they are that young

piggie88 · 27/02/2019 20:56

No I don’t think they do, they took it seriously and kept her in, there was another patient on the ward who had done exactly the same too, so that made me feel better that I wasn’t just over panicking and wasting their time.
Thank you for all your advice.
