Could ds (11) have diabetes

He wet the bed a couple of weeks ago. He hasn't done that since he was a toddler. He also has really strong unpleasant smelling urine. I've just put some of his pants on the wash and was gagging (they weren't wet). Other than that he is healthy and happy, no other symptoms I've noticed. Please tell me it's not going to be diabetes!

Is he going to the toilet more than usual? Is he thirsty all the time? And does he look like he's lost weight?

Those are the main symptoms of Type 1 (as well as being tired all the time). If not, it's unlikely to be diabetes, but maybe just take him to the doctors if you're worried anyway and if you do suspect it is, it's imperative that he gets to the doctors as soon as possible.

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2019 09:35

No nothing like that I've noticed. But you think I should take him anyway?

Take him to the Dr. Could be a wee infection which could easily get sorted. Is he drinking enough?

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2019 09:38

I wondered about that but in a boy this old? Plus he hasn't wet the bed again. Think I need to take him don't i

It might be worth checking out if you're worried but maybe just a urine infection. If he isn't showing any of the other symptoms I would say it's unlikely to be diabetes, tbh.

DD went downhill pretty fast when she developed it. It was quite noticeable and she had an absolutely raging thirst.

Is he drinking enough? Can you phone the surgery and ask if you can drop a sample in for dipping?

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2019 09:40

Thank you and sorry to hear you've been through this puddings. Asking if the surgery will accept a sample is an excellent idea thank you

Type 1 diagnosis is usually at a very young age, although can have late onset (see Theresa May). You'd want the GP to do a blood sugar test too. (DP is a T1 for 35+ years). It's imperative you have this checked, better to get an all clear than having a hypoglycaemic seizure (low blood sugar), or hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar), both of which can cause serious issues, and be life threatening.

BlackInk · 19/02/2019 10:16

T1 diabetes can start at any age. My sister was 30 and my step-brother 17 when diagnosed. I would book your DS in with the GP OP, but without other symptoms it's likely that the cause is something else.

Has he started to go through puberty? The stronger smelling bodily fluids could indicate this...

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2019 10:22

Yes he has!! Ver reassuring thanks

Did you call the Dr? Hopefully it's nothing but it's true that T1 can start at any age so definitely worth checking.

StealthPolarBear · 20/02/2019 06:31

I didn't. He's actually staying with my mum and dad at the moment, I'm collecting him today. I spoke to my mum who was a nurse who said she thought he doesn't drink enough and that he had no symptoms of an infection or diabetes. I have three days now to decide whether to take him to docs.
