Sore throat in a baby - too young for honey

What can I give DS to help his sore throat? He's 10.5 months so still too young for lemon and honey. Poor mite has a respiratory infection and his throat is red raw... It's so sore that he is refusing bottles, the only things he has happily eaten today have been some rice pudding and a fromage frais (yes, I know sugary puddings twice in one day is bad, but I figured it's better that he eats SOMETHING), everything else seems to have aggravated his throat too much.

What else could I try that would coat his throat and get some fluids into him?

Calpol?

moreismore · 18/02/2019 18:55

You can get infant cough syrup which is basically just flavoured glycerine

He's on Calpol and baby nurofen already - it's more that I need a way of getting him to drink fluids without it hurting.

Not healthy but chocolate is supposed to be good for a sore throat and cough.....

Sugar free ice pops?
Yoghurt lollies?
Can always go back to the healthy stuff once they better.

Ice pops are a great idea, thank you! Will try those... And yes, broccoli has gone out of the window today, we're on whatever he can manage to eat!

I used a toddler cough syrup syrup when my ds was slightly younger than yours. It was called Tixylix (spelling might be wrong!) it was suitable from 3 months and black currant flavour. My ds quite happily took it. I used a syringe instead of a spoon, found it easier.

You'd need to get it prescribed in his age, but difflam spray would probably help.

Figmentofimagination · 18/02/2019 22:47

I second difflam spray. A nurse friend recommended it to me when my DS had croup at 20 months. You can give 1 puff per 4kg if weight.

DD (11 months) had tonsillitis recently and they gave us an anaesthetic spray for her throat so that we could get some fluids in to her - you'd need to see your GP to get it.
