1yo bloody stool and piles?

My 1yo has had the odd bout of constipation and doing massive poos which he finds painful (they don't seem that hard, just huge) as he screams when he's doing then and his stomach goes really hard.

Been giving him prunes but he's really picky about what he eats day to day. Anyway last night he did a painful poo which had blood mixed in with it and (sorry) a bit of his anus seemed to have popped out slightly - not a bright red prolapse thank God, just the a swollen bit... I'm assuming piles and/or anal fissures, poor baby - but can I do anything about it? Will make a gp appt asap next week obviously.

His backside looks pretty normal this morning but I'm still worried

Gp asap. Movicol is best to keep stools soft and regular.
Read the ERIC website.
You need to get on top of this now in order to prevent long term problems.

Sorry OP I don't have any relevant experience here but lots of sympathy.

I'd deffo keep up the prunes etc. Could you mix them in to a smoothie? My DS who is a similar age loves smoothies. You could do a chocolate one with prunes, cocao powder, almond milk maybe a few oats to thicken it a bit? Or some lactolose stuff to properly ease it maybe. You could always call the NHS advice line for the meantime before you go to the GP.

I'd avoid anything bulking. After I had DS I had a bad tear (soz for tmi!) and the tear specialist said to avoid banana at its v bulking, which I didn't realise and had been scoffing them like nobody's business.

I agree with @endofthelinefinally gp and movicol is the way to go.

The earlier you can sort this the better for your ds, hopefully anyway.

My ds was similar and I thought I could handle it with prunes/veg/fibre diet but movicol was the best- not to mention the support from my gp.

If you can't get in to a gp over the weekend try syrup of figs??

sweatybettee · 16/02/2019 09:59

Thanks. He eats lots of fruit and have been avoiding banana so nothing obviously bad in his diet. I'll see if I can get syrup of figs today. Might talk to the pharmacist in Boots actually..

My friend's gp got annoyed with her for going to then about constipation instead of asking the health visitor so I've had that in mind! But it's not been this bad before.

You can get lactulose from the chemist which is suitable for tiddlers as well and softens stools. Also definitely recommend gp. If it's a recurring thing they can prescribe to help manage. Our daughter has ended up with sort of little skin flaps in her bottom from where her bottom has healed after bouts of constipation so could be that you're seeing? It's really awful, hope things improve soon.
