22 month old not even standing

Hello everyone, I’m a GM to a beautiful boy who we love to bits. He’s almost 22 months old and we are still waiting for him to stand, at least with support. He’s been very late with all his gross motor skills, only rolled over at 12 months, sitting up unaided at about 14 months and he’s been shuffling on him tummy as opposed to crawling on his knees until he was about 19 months. He can stand in his knees now, but no signs of wanting to stand on his feet, can’t seem to be able to bear his weight.

DS, his dad, was also a late walker but he took his first steps at 18 months.

Also GS is not saying any words yet either, just making sounds.

Any parents out there who went through this?

Has he been to health visitor? It sounds like he could do with a physiotherapy evaluation.

Has seen anybody about it? My DD was very late to walk (2+) but she cold stand at 22 months but took a while to learn how to walk. Now at 3.5 she has been diagnosed with low muscle tone and hyper mobility but she has made huge improvements but is still unsteady at times, falls over a lot and can’t run or jump etc like her peers.

I took her to the HV at 18 months, they told me they wouldn’t refer for late walking until 2 but in your grandsons case I think they need to see him. Health visitors were useless for helping DD by they can make the appropriate referrals (Paediatrician’s, physio therapists etc).

My daughter is also speech delayed I have been told it can all end related to low muscle tone too.

Good luck!

My son didn't walk until he was 22 months but he was weight bearing. I took him to get me shoes and the lady in the shop noticed him 'rolling in' on his ankles. I bought some sturdy winter boots and he walked soon after.
Due to her advise I took him to see the health visitor and eventually he was assessed and diagnosed with Dyspraxia and hypermobility (basically double jointed). I'd say.make an appt with your GP. Good luck xxxxxxxx

Sounds like he needs SALT and physio support if he hasn't already? Is your HV aware?

Lou0390 · 17/02/2019 08:41

I would advise a physio referral. My son was 2+ when he walked. Turns out he has low muscle town and hyper mobility in his ankles. With ankle supports, swimming and physio he come on leaps and bounds. Still can jump or run fast but is getting there.

Does he see a HV? He should really have been observed and referred when he wasn't sitting.

I would go to the GP and ask for a referral to physio, SALT and paediatrician.

How is he with playing and eating?

Does he got to nursery at all?

cestlavielife · 18/02/2019 22:53

He needs to be evaluated by physio and by paediatrician

MaudeLynne · 18/02/2019 23:03

Another late walker with hypermobility here - infact he didn't move much at all, in the cot, playing etc. What did the GP do? Who was he referred to?

spinabifidamom · 18/02/2019 23:03

He needs therapy. DS has been under the watchful eyes of our local physical therapy team since he was six months old. We are about to start aqua/pool therapy sessions later on this year too. DD participates in occupational therapy sessions twice a week. Can you ask for a referral? Speech therapy seems like a good idea too.
Your pediatrician should be a good source of information. I’d start there. Good luck!!

Thank you everyone, very helpful! He’s had several assessments at 10, 12 and 18 months, I don’t know the full details from my son but doctors don’t think there is something horribly wrong with him, but we are very worried. Another assessment is due at 2 years old. We are pushing for a referral and therapy so hopefully that’ll happen soon.

His fine motor skills are great, he’s been feeding himself from very early on and plays with toys, very good with pressing buttons, turning pages etc.

Thank you again everyone x
