Sugar intolerance?

DS 7 has had diarrhoea for a week, I took him to the GP today, I have to collect a stool sample. Tonight he said his tummy hurts when he eats sugary things, could this be sugar intolerance? And if it is, what do I give him instead of bread? He's required to take a healthy, filling snack to his after school activity, up until now he's had a tuna sandwich. Also, I've absolutely no idea what to give him for breakfast.

Try rolled oats or an omelette for breakfast. What type of bread are you using? Normal white toast? See if you can find spelt bread. Or if there is a sushi bar near your place a tuna roll for after school?

We use 50-50.

Thanks so much for your help.

Why do you think it’s sugar? There must be other commonalities- dairy, wheat, gluten? Best to eat normally and keep a food diary. Food intolerances can’t be tested for in the same way as allergies so it’s really down to keeping a diary then trying to eliminate items one at a time. Sugar isn’t a common intolerance, it’s not in the top 14.

That's why I asked the question. Since cutting out sugar his diarrhoea has cleared up and he hasn't had stomach ache. Coincidence? He's had eggs and bacon for breakfast, cottage pie for lunch and chilli for supper, and he's been absolutely fine. We're trying it for a week and will gradually reintroduce sugar after that. On my diabetic adult DS's suggestion I've been looking at diabetic breakfast ideas.

Great news that his diarrhoea has stopped. I think these things can be complex and the gut balance is quite delicate ulout good at fixing itself when pointed in the right direction. .

I do think sugar is often an issue and we don't actually need any refined sugar in our diet. Carbs, yes, fruit, yes but refined sugar which doesn't bring any other nutrients with it.. no.

It looks like you have also excluded gluten and dairy from his diet based on the list so it could equally be one of those causing the issue.

Eat lots of healthy vegetables, healthy fats, probiotics (non dairy based) and allow his gut to heal. (Carrot juice, coconut oil, seeds) then see how he is. When you reintroduce, do it slowly and also watch his mood as this can be the first indicator of an issue.

I haven't actually excluded gluten and dairy from his diet, this was just a day and a bit's food. He's back at school on Monday with compulsory school meals unless for medical reasons, they have fruit at morning playtime and have things like burgers in baps and pizza for lunch, we'll see how it goes.

I've looked on the menu, Monday's lunch doesn't seem too bad, jacket potato bar with a choice of chilli, tuna mayo or cheese and beans, sweetcorn and crunchy coleslaw, he won't have the pudding as it's rice pudding, he'll probably have fruit.

His mood's pretty erratic anyway as he's got ADHD.

It is probably just a coincidence that his upset tum got better after eliminating certain foods. If he had just had a bit of a bug, it would have cleared up in the same amount of time. There are a lot of tummy bugs doing the rounds at the moment.

It was 7 days when we went to the doctor's that's why she asked for the sample, she thinks it may be a bacterial infection. He went back to school and the diarrhoea came back, we'll see what happens on Monday. Cutting out sugar can't do any harm.

Lots of children with ADHD have issues with sugar and have gut issues. Read Gut and the psychology syndrome.

Sugar and ADHD is an urban myth!
