Hydrocele

Hello, my son has a communicating hydrocele (which was noticed when he was about 9 months old) he’s been offered surgery next month (after a long wait) however he will only be 16 months old then. I cannot find a policy for my local trust , but all other nhs trust policies suggest for children to have the surgery between 2-4 years. I have discussed this with the surgeon who said they do it from 1 year in this trust. He is having the operation in the afternoon, so one of my main concerns is that I cannot explain to him why he can’t eat/ drink all day (he gets hysterical when hungry/ thirsty). I’m also concerned about pain / infection at his age. I was wondering if anyone else’s children have had this done and what the outcomes were? There seems to be a lot of risks at this age. I am a nurse myself but have little experience in paediatrics. Thank you in advance x

My son had a different operation at that age and I too was worried about the hunger and thirst. Fortunately he was so excited about all the new and exciting toys on the ward that he didn't bat an eyelid, finally went to theatre at 3pm. Good luck.
