Temperature of 38 and school....

Hi

My son had S and D on Saturday night, until Sunday morning.

Monday he woke with a sore throat etc and a temperature of 38.6.

Today his temperature is still 38.

Can I send him to school? He's snotty and says his throat hurts. Ive looked in his mouth and his throat just looks a little red.

School are notoriously snotty about being off and I always feel they don't believe me.

I don't want to go to the GP yet, as he's fine in himself.

xx

No need for a GP but he should not be at school today as he is clearly still unwell with a temperature of 38.

Temperature of 38.6 will make him feel really rotten, you can't send him to school like that.

Greensleeves · 05/02/2019 09:31

Ditto 38, it's still too high imo

Is he 48 hours clear of the last episode of d or v? If not he needs to stay off today anyway.

How old is he? If he's in primary school I would keep him off with a slight temperature and feeling under the weather. If he's older I would give paracetamol, go to school and see how he gets on.

Is he prone to tonsillitis? That can cause tummy trouble alongside fever and sore throat.

Hi

Unfortunately he is prone to terrible tonsillitis. But they look at atm.

He's 9.

Im sure he had a tummy bug and my husband and daughter were not well either.

He still had "bad wind" yesterday.

He's just complaining about a sore throat today but his throat looks OK atm. School really annoys me - he had a dreadful S and D episode at the start of December and a high temperature and was off for 3 days. I received a letter last week stating his attendance is low now!

He has tried to pull a couple of fast ones at school last term. They called me to collect him, I took him home and then sent him back to school!

God, I hope this doesnt develop into tonsillitis - last time we were at a temperature of 41 and in hospital and off school for a week Angry

Even when he was really ill with such a high temperature before, no one could believe how ill he was as he was acting normal!

Did you decide to keep him off then? I hope he's feeling better soon, and also that he's not trying to skive off. I would keep him off today anyway if you're pretty sure it was a tummy bug.

Hi

Yes, he is off today. He certainly does have a temperature.

School have been crap in the past when he's said he doesn't feel well. They never took his temperature until he fainted at school as it rocketed and was 39.9 - tonsillitis from Hell.

All they ever say is to take a drink of water.

I can hear he is snotty when he talks. Also, he has been crying as he is missing an afterschool club which he adores.

Sounds like you made the right call OP. The school can't do anything if your child is genuinely ill. The letters they send out are usually standardised/automated.

boble1 · 05/02/2019 10:14

@BlackInk

Oh is it? I didnt realise that about the letter. Most annoying!

I just hope that bringing him back to school after pulling a fast one works in my favour!

Maybe I should take photos of his sick and diarrhea (sp) next time as well as the thermometer readings!

I even took photos of him in the hospital during the summer for proof.

xx
