Toddler constant cough

Someone please help.

My 15 month old has had a bad cough for four weeks. He's been seen by various doctors, had a course of antibiotics for a chest infection, steroids inhalers etc but the damn cough isn't shifting. He hasn't slept well for the whole of the time as the cough keeps waking him. I'm starting to feel like it's never going to leave - what could it be?

Rsv infection can take weeks to shift

Is he snotty? If so I would address that to relieve the cough a bit. Prop up the head of his cough when he sleeps. Also ask your GP about giving otrivine drops which can dry up snot (not licensed for under 6s but they often recommend you try in certain circumstances as they used to give to all children - just they don’t do clinical trials on babies!)

Does the inhaler not help at all?

Kittykat93 · 03/02/2019 21:18

Thanks for the reply! Yes he has been snotty for the whole time aswell. Think the inhaler helps a bit but not enough.

OP, my DS is now older but at this age he had one cold after another, never ending chain of sleepless nights and miserable days. What made the biggest difference was nebuliser used just with saline solution. It was recommended by a specialist when everything else had failed. We just got a £40 one from Boots, saline solution for nebuliser was surprisingly difficult to get in store, I ended up buying some online. It was a total game changer for us.
Hope your DC is better soon. Flowers and Cake for you OP.

Mine gets a tickly cough with teething? Glad you've seen doctors. Manuka honey can be quite good, and soothing too.

Thank you for flowers cake and suggestions Smile

I keep thinking maybe he's also teething - his cheeks keep going the most bright red!

Interesting about the nebuliser - I used to have one when my asthma was bad and it was brilliant
