Spiking temp in child what next?

Wondering if any one knows what else I can do, my dd 3 came over funny yesterday evening temp was 39. I gave calpol and phoned 111 she then came out in a rash, they sent an ambulance her temp shot up to 40. Sat up there for 7 hours only to be told she's fine now they don't know if she's got an infection somewhere but to send a urine sample of in week, they didn't take any bloods im already annoyed about this.
Fast forward today her temperature keeps spiking back up to 40, and then back down but now it's 4am and it's been between 39.65 and 39.98 for the past hour and calpol isn't budging it. She's now had the maximum calpol she can have today
What next do I try? 111 don't seem to be interested and I'm at a loss tbh I just want her to be well again I don't drive so I can't just run her up the hospital again?

She keeps complaining of a stomach ache, and a neck ache too but they felt her tummy and said it seems fine is this just a viral thing going around?

Why are you taking her temperature so often? A temperature itself isn’t seen as too worrying without any other symptoms and calpol or ibuprofen isn’t really indicated unless the child is distressed. If she is distressed then you can also give ibuprofen. But I’d let her sleep- a temperature can help the body to fight off illness so actually isn’t even a bad thing to allow. Keep offering fluids and let her sleep.

Cross posted with you about her pain- you could try ibuprofen? Hopefully she will get some sleep. There are loads of horrible viruses around.

Have you given her ibuprofen too? Get a wee sample tomorrow - clean and scrubbed potty if you don't have a wee bag for nappy. Then drop off to A&E ... did the hospital yell you to send sample to them directly? I'd perhaps see if you can see out of hours If not with a sample as they can do a dip stick and if it's bacterial they can give antibiotics

Stop taking her temp so much , give her some ibuprofen and if she is settled go to sleep ! Sometimes children just have high temps and if she is not distressed and doesn't have any other alarming symptoms in all likelihood it's a virus

DD had fever a couple of weeks ago - not the same thing as no rash but she was also holding her neck and had other symptoms. Had to give both Calpol and ibuprofen - at one point her temperature continued to go up after both but would eventually come down. We followed this pattern for 3 days before she was given antibiotics. They wanted a urine sample but we just couldn't get one from her so in the end they just issued them (her wee was very dark and smelt quite strong and she was holding her tummy too). Antibiotics cleared it up fairly quickly so assume in her case water infection.

For now try ibuprofen and Calpol and try and get a sample tested. If you get it over the weekend then keep it in the fridge until you can get it tested.

How is she now? If you are worried then go back to be seen? If not just keep an eye on the rash/fluid in take/how she is etc.

how is she I would get some neurofen

I know people will disagree but I rarely take my children's temperatures. I can tell if they have a fever using my hand on their forehead. I try hard to ignore the number on a thermometer as I know I'd get obsessive. I register the fever, give calpol if they are distressed, and then go by their demeanour. I take the temperature only if I think they are still feverish after medication.
This had stood me in good stead and I might add, the two most serious illnesses my children had were not accompanied by fevers at all (intussusception and a blood disorder) - I knew they were very ill by their behaviour, not the number on a thermometer.

Why is none telling you to take her back to hospital?!

Take her back to hospital

Now

Agree red

JellycatElfie · 04/02/2019 11:26

A temp that doesn’t come down with paracetamol always warrants an emergency department trip. How is she today?

Quartz2208 · 04/02/2019 11:51

JellycatElfie I agree a temp that doesnt come down warrants a trip but on mine calpol is useless without neurofen on the side

Utis · 06/02/2019 14:56

Agree Calpol never works here either. Neurofen is the only one that does the job.
It’s only been the second day too, so fever in itself like this is not a problem. It’s the immune system doing what it’s designed to do. And unfortunately young children will get fevers often..lots of viral bugs doing the rounds to keep us on our toes.
