Coughing and wheezing

My daughter is 3. Last night she had a cough when she went to bed and through the night was quite wheezy and kept coughing and waking up. This morning she seemed to perk up a bit and she said she was ok to go to nursery but they phoned and said she was coughing so much she couldn't catch her breathe and actually asked if she had an inhaler. She sounds raspy and hasn't stopped coughing since we got home an hour ago. Should I take her to walk in or just keep her at home and early night with Calpol? I'm only asking because I'd need to get bus to walk in and takes half an hour to get there and don't want to take her out in the cold incase it gets worse. She's raspy all the time not just when coughing.

I'd probably see how she is after some Calpol and some sleep tonight. Maybe run the bath with the door closed to get the room steamy and try to open her airways, and put some Olbas oil on her pillow when she goes to sleep.

I know I'm going to sound like a crazy person, but when my DS was young and used to get upper respiratory tract infections frequently, someone told me to put Vicks on the soles of his feet and cover with socks when he went to sleep. It legitmately stops him coughing at night, and I have NO IDEA why it works.

If she's still struggling tomorrow morning, see if you can get an emergency GP appointment.

Get her seen by a GP. She may well need an inhaler and they can advise. She shouldn't be struggling for breath.

Nurse here. Get her seen today.

Yes it sounds like she may have viral wheeze and that needs an inhaler - DS gets it and only uses when ill
