DD unable to poo on her own

disneymumx · 27/01/2019 17:52

My DD is now 11 weeks old and since being 10 days old has been unable to poo by herself. Instead I have to manoeuvre it out of her, pushing her knees up to her chest, bicycling her legs and pulling apart her cheeks. She was 4 weeks early so I've put this down to immature bowels and not being fully developed. I've become so used to things being this way that it's somewhat normal but beginning to become worried again as she's nearly 3 months old. Surely this can't be normal? Doctors are not concerned and don't bat an eyelid when I tell them. Has anyone else experienced this? If so when did it stop? I never thought I'd be praying for the day I took off her nappy and saw a poo!!

No this is not normal. How soft is her poo? Are you breast feeding or bottle? How often does she go?

She has literally not had a poo by herself since she was 10 days old. I've spoke to HV, MW, doctors and all seem to fob me off. She's bottle fed and the amount can vary, she's either very constipated or has diarrhoea, spoke to doctors about this too as I suspect a CMPA but again they fob me off. Consistency is normal but obviously when she has diarrhoea it is purely water and sprays out. I just don't know what to do next!

Have you tried a different formula?

Wingingthis · 27/01/2019 22:44

I had a similar experience with my CMPA baby but was bf so could just cut out dairy and see. But as your FF just keep pushing!! No one believed be for so long despite my DD having green blood streaked poo

It's not normal for a ten week old to have frequent diarrhoea or such difficulty pooing. What exactly are doctors/HVs saying? How is her weight gain? I think in your shoes I would be demanding a paediatrician referral.

DD had severe constipation since moving to formula at around 4 weeks (breast milk just resulted in projectile vomiting). Doing a poo was just as you described - vey traumatic for all involved. She got put on Movicol which has been great. She's now 2.5 yrs and still on it. If she misses even one dose we're in for a world of pain.

I'd definitely push to get someone to look at her properly if she's struggling as you describe because the difference medication made to DD was incredible.

Her weight gain is perfectly normal which I think is the reason doctors don't seem to care. They tell me it's very unlikely for her to have any kind of allergy or intolerance but you know yourself when something isn't right. However, as a first time mum they have the ability to make you feel like you're overreacting. They've offered no suggestions in how to help or stop any symptoms.
She suffers terribly in general with her tummy, constant wind and bloating. I've changed her milk from SMA to aptamil and have now put her on aptamil lactose free to see if that made any difference. There has been a difference, symptoms have improved but not resolved completely. On top of this I've tried infacol, gripe water, colief, anti colic bottles. All having no affect whatsoever.
