Braces for trumpet players

My dentist wants to refer my daughter for a brace. She plays trumpet at Grade 8 level (national ensembles) and performs/rehearses for 18 plus hours a week, playing in a high register. I'm concerned metal braces will cause her discomfort and limit her playing. Does anyone have any experience of brass players with braces or any advice / recommendations? I'm wondering if Invisalign may be a solution?

Yes two of my DS's play trumpet one to a very high standard, one had braces the other new of people how played at a high standard that did. Theres no standard rule it all depends on what type of brace, the age (how old is DD) how developed the gums already are, yes really they are all factors. I would say it can be painful to begin with, do not let your DD practice 18 hours a week, it will reck her lips, you risk blisters and tearing them. build it up slowly. Unfortunately brass players and braces overall do not mix, but it shouldn't stop her completely. But she may find she needs to build her upper register again

my sister (frech horn proffessional) has braces.
she got ones to wear for 20 hours a day, so she could remove them for practice.
ask her teacher and the dentist/orthodontist. be very upfront about her requirements.

sorry, she had braces for a few years.
be very cautious about dentists wanting to remove teeth. get a second opinion if that's discussed

Thank you. That's very helpful. Hadn't thought about tooth removal as well.

at her level maybe ask her ensemble colleagues for recommendations? some orthodontists know more about brass/wind instrument players than others.

I played a wind instrument and had 'train track' braces. I was given wax to put over the brackets to make practice more comfortable - and this is over 20 years ago. If you go down the train track route, it's definitely worth asking.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Much appreciated.
