Cyclic vomiting syndrome

Anyone had this?
Dd has provisional diagnosis following bouts of nausea, vomiting and reflux since the summer. Completely well in between. The gastroenterologist thinks it might be connected to food intolerance (atopic as infant) or hormones (teenager, starting menstruating this year). Given lansoprazole and ondansetron.

Interested to hear from others, any tips for managing it?

I get it mildly & always have for me it's just vomiting. It's worse in the week leading up to & during my period bloody nightmare when ttc & symptom spotting. I used to take ondansetron during my teens but to be perfectly honest it only ever took the edge off.

I've always tried to delay brushing my teeth when I know I'm at the point in my cycle where it's at it's worst as it's a definite trigger. I have to do school runs so I do do them very quickly but won't do them properly until later. When I was at school & was working I'd get up 30 min/ an hour early so the worst would have gone by the time I needed to leave. I only had m/s with 3 of my 5 pregnancies but the things that help are pretty similar, eat something plain, sips of water etc.

Abdominal migraines?

LucheroTena · 16/01/2019 13:58

I think it’s part of the migraine spectrum BlackInk.

Thanks Bernard sorry to hear you’ve had it so long. Do you get headache migraine too?

My son was diagnosed with CVS when he was 8. It followed a similar pattern, he would wake early and be sick for the next 4-5 hours, sometimes with diarrhoea. He would then recover and sleep for a bit before being perfectly fine again. It could happen every few weeks or have several months in between. He took ondansetron which possibly helped him get over it quicker but didn't really stop it.

We didn't really see any triggers and it seemed very unpredictable. He's 19 now and had his last episode 3 years ago so hopefully he's grown out of it.

Thanks PJ, glad he’s better now. What helped him manage it? Did it cause any lasting problems? I can imagine it would cause anxiety.

I had it for years, starting in my late teens. Every 5 months I'd wake up and just know it was going to start. Then I'd vomit frequently for up to 16 hours, sleeping in between.

Mine eventually morphed into classical migraine, via optical migraine. I'll still throw up with migraine if I don't take preventative drugs soon enough (ie as soon as I start feeling like I need to crack my neck which is a weird precursor for me), but nothing like the horror of the CVS

My DS (10) has migraines pretty much every 6 weeks, and he vomits for hours everytime. I've been to the GP who said 'nothing comes in a cycle apart from menstruation' (load of rubbish) so he won't give DS anything for it. On Monday this week, DS was fine one minute, then the next crying holding his head and saying 'mum I don't feel well' he couldn't walk, I had to practically carry him up the stairs.

CMOT I’m glad it got better with time, sounded horrendous.

So sorry to hear that flower it must be very distressing. Has he been referred to a specialist?

DS had this for several years, would vomit 4 or 5 times a day for a couple of days, then nothing for a couple of weeks. Thankfully he grew out of it. No association with migraines

LucheroTena · 18/01/2019 23:37

Glad he’s ok now bio, how did it affect life day to day? Did anything help prevent/manage?

Following thos with interest!
My 13 yrs old ds is sick almost every night sometimes with diarrhoea as well. This has being going on for around 13 months.
He suffers badly with migraines and has just been discharged from alder hey peds as she has no clue to why its happening.
Hes been on ompetazol 20mg didnt make any difference and an mri, came back clear.
We have now been referred to the gastric clinic next month, where im hoping we will get some answers.
We have kept food dairies, put him on a bland diet but doesnt make a blind bit of difference.

Palestperson · 19/01/2019 13:25

Does anybody know of you can have this without vomiting for hours every time? DS gets random vomiting attacks every 2-4 months. He wakes a couple of hours after going to bed, does one epic puke, occasionally with one mild bout of diarrhoea, goes back to sleep and is fine in the morning. It’s been going on for a couple of years and seems to fit with CVS apart from him only being sick once per episode.

molemonkey · 19/01/2019 16:02

My ds is usually only sick once after hes got into bed and then is fine afterwards and the next morning until the night time when hes sick again

bionicnemonic · 19/01/2019 23:27

I’ve not heard of an association with diarrhoea with it.
We didn’t find anything to help DS, just trying not to let him worry about it (and having a big laugh even now when we reminisce about him sat in the rear car seat and vomiting in a projectile fashion all over the back of the head of the front seat passenger!)
We ended up having to have the carpet replaced with laminate as the poor chap was struck with a bout without warning.

bionicnemonic · 19/01/2019 23:30

We had a double layer on the bed...so waterproof cover/sheet/waterproof cover/sheet so if he was sick we could just strip the top layer off without having to remake the bed and he could get back in.

DD wakes with it in the morning, sometimes very late evening, often with a lump in throat, abdo rumbling, gas and nausea. Burps a lot, sometimes sulphur. Then it can turn into bouts of sudden forceful vomiting with abdo pain. Then she sleeps for hours and it’s gone. Ondansetron seems to have helped. Her period started yesterday which I guess may have triggered this. I can’t see any obvious food trigger. It seems to come in spats, she’s had a few bouts since beginning of year, before that was Sept, that was bouts too. More vomiting this time. Feels fine in between. Having an ultrasound this pm.
