Microscopic blood in urine (boy aged 11)

My ds had really bad low centre and right stomach pains last night. slightly improved this morning so took him to the gp anyway and the dipstick year showed he has microscopic blood in his wee. Of course I am thinking all sorts of bad things. A full urine test has gone off for analysis. No antibiotics as it’s a watch and wait apparently. Anyone else heard of this in a boy? Stop me panicking (I tend to catastrophise and get myself in a tizzy)

Don’t worry, microscopic haematuria is very common, and often without any underlying reason. My daughter has frequent urine/kidney infections, so often has this, or sometimes visible bleeding, but the sticks would usually show other positives such as leukocytes and nitrites. Even a little urethral irritation could cause microscopic blood, I really wouldn’t worry. The lab will first establish whether this is true harmaturia, by actually identifying red blood cells, and then your doctor would probably repeat the test to see if it continues or whether it was just a transient blip, which it may well be. Hope all goes well!

Hiya, they decided to refer him to hospital this morning, and he’s just gone in to have his appendix removed. They’re not totally convinced that’s the problem but it must be likely (nhs op). Wish us luck!

Oh dear, so sorry to hear this! Appendicitis can present in so many different ways, it is definitely better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes to you both and hope the op all goes well Flowers
