Paracetamol problems!

Have an 8 month old boy who seems to be having all kind of problems.

He has Cows Milk Protein Allergy for starters, but he's had a cold and upset stomach lately so have given him calpol and ibuprofen (not at the same time!).

Basically both of them are causing the poor little man really bad squirts!

The calpol was strawberry flavoured and ibuprofen was orange flavoured. Both were sugar free.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else to try?

Cheers :)

Those are both you main pain relief for little people. Are you sure it's the calpol/ibuprofen giving him a bad tummy and not the cold/CMPA? They may just be an unfortunate coincidence?

Definitely the pain relief. We have held off giving him them as much as possible and he only gets the upset stomach after the medicine :(

It could well be the sweeteners in the medicine - many of them have known laxative effects. You can get full sugar calpol (dark purple box). I've only ever seen sugar-free varieties of ibuprofen though. Failing that, you can get paracetamol suppositories for children from the pharmacy (v common in France!).

I would avoid sugar free versions, they unsettle my son terribly.

You can get the generic versions from the pharmacy and even non coloured versions (plus they’re cheaper!), might be worth a try.

Just to add it’s perfectly safe to give calpol and nurofen at the same time as they are different types of pain medicines. It’s just more effective to stagger them.

Try the version with sugar, sweeteners can cause the squirts.
