UTI in 4month old baby boy

My baby boy (4 months) was Weeing out green mucous, no other symptoms, fine in himself. trip to the doc who tested his urine confirms nitrates present so he needs antibiotics. She says he will need a follow up scan. I’m a little concerned as I didn’t think it was very common for boys to get UTIs, let alone as young as 4 months. Has anyone had experience of a baby so young having a uti? Did they refer you for a scan and what were the results? Any idea what they are checking for?

My DS was born with posterior urethral valves and a high bladder neck and he got a severe UTI at 17 days old. They will scan to find out if there is anything untoward, like PUV/high bladder neck but also to check his kidneys/bladder/ureters for damage. DS is fine now but did have hydronephrosis, kidney reflux and needed surgery to resect the PUVs and he may have continence issues but we'll only know that when we come to potty train him when he's older. Hope this helps.

My DS had a UTI at 10 weeks. They scanned him just to check everything had developed normally, which it had so no idea what caused it. He had recurring infections for a few months but he’s a perfectly healthy 6 year old now. Try not to worry.

Mine wasn't gaining weight and in the end they checked his wee and he had an infection. He improved post-ABs and he's a perfectly ok teenager now with no further problems.

Thanks all for your replies. I feel a bit better now, hoping it’s nothing more than bad luck. @YouBoggleMyMind I’m glad to hear your ds is now fine, it must have been very stressful having to have surgery so little.

Thank you @Tinyteatime Smile
That was one of the less stressful surgeries he's had since he was 17 days old! He was very poorly!

I suffered with them quite a lot as a baby so I think it's just one of those things . My DS also has a kidney condition (he is absolutely fine and healthy I am not saying this to scare you) and uti's can be a symptom of it playing up so I assume they want to just double , triple check that the bladder and kidneys are ok. Just to err on the side of caution. Hope he's feeling better soon Smile

When ds was the same age he was extremely unwell with a UTI. Scan revealed he had Vesico-ureteric reflux where the urine wasn't draining but instead flowing back up into his kidneys, and his left kidney hadn't grown properly so only offering 25% function.

He's fine now and discharged from all monitoring (hospital were seeing him every 6 months) with no long term ill effects.

So it could be something, it could be nothing. Fingers crossed op Smile

@heymammy thanks for responding. At what age was your ds discharged? Glad to hear he is fine now.

Hey Tiny he was 3 when he stopped taking his nightly prophylactic antibiotic and 4 or maybe 5 when he was discharged.

At 13 months he had a small day surgery called a STING procedure to try and stop the urine flowing back up the way. It worked to an extent but scans showed he still had some reflux however the consultant said it was something he would grow out of.

So although it was a worrying time, ds was not ill with it at all barring that very first UTI!

Have you got a scan date yet?
