Why are some children taller than others in their class?

As you may notice in your own area, some children are (much) taller than others in their class.

Usually, is it because of their genes or is there something that we can learn from so that we can help our own children grow taller?

For example, some say drinking milk helps children taller.

Thanks,

Well, I read once that the reason blue whales get so big is partly due to the fact they have the room to be, being ocean dwelling beasties. Any free time my dc have is therefore spent in large bodies of water.

My children are very big and soggy.

loobywench · 14/01/2019 11:33

I'm 6ft and my dh was 5ft 9. My son's are now 6ft 5 and 6ft 4!

tinytemper66 · 14/01/2019 11:34

Why aspire to being tall? I am under 5ft but am not bothered at all!

hannah1992 · 14/01/2019 11:35

I was always one of the tallest at school. I haven't grown an inch since I was 14. Most of my friends are the same height or taller.

I think it's mainly genetics. My mum is 5"5 I am 5"6 My dad is about 6".

My dh is 6" my oldest dd is one of the tallest in her class (she's 8) my youngest is 3 and tall for her age

woollyheart · 14/01/2019 11:35

If you trim their roots you will restrict their height. This can be a great advantage for avoiding back troubles.

SitOnMyHouse · 14/01/2019 11:37

Genetics and healthy diet. If you’re predisposed to be short you can have the healthiest diet in the world and still be short.

bigbluebus · 14/01/2019 11:38

DS was always one of the tallest in his class throughout primary and secondary. He drank very little milk after toddlerhood. He's 6ft 3 now. DH is 6ft 4 and I'm 5ft 9 so I think his height is entirely down to genetics.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/01/2019 11:40

There are some health conditions that might restrict growth. One of my friends has a very short son, and he was checked for coeliac's disease. He is fine, he just has a short mum.

"Why aspire to being tall"

Why not? I am 5'7" and love my height. I can reach the top shelf in supermarkets with ease, buying clothes isn't usually a problem, my body and legs are in proportion and I can lose/gain half a stone and no-one will notice.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 14/01/2019 11:41

I drank milk everyday till my 20s. I'm 5ft 1.

It's genetic.

My mum was short, her mum was short. I'm short.

I only have boys so only the youngest is shorter than me still. Adult son is 5ft 9. His dad is 5ft 8. Second is 5ft 10 and still got a couple of years growing to do.

My youngest was the shortest boy in his class when he started school, he's pretty average with his peers now.

I've never done anything to help my kids grow taller, well, nothing other than feed them!

KittensAndCake · 14/01/2019 11:42

What's so good about being tall?

You get to look down on other people 😉

My children are very big and soggy.

🤣😂

Fromage · 14/01/2019 11:43

I'd like my children to be shorter, so I attach heavy weights to them at all times.

This comes in useful when walking back from the shops. Or taking an old sideboard to the dump.

Glad to share tips.

PickAChew · 14/01/2019 11:43

I water mine well. Neither drink milk.

GerryblewuptheER · 14/01/2019 11:43

Many kids in school are overweight.

Overweight usually results in them.being over tall aswell.

Long term they end up shorter as they hit puberty sooner and stop growing.

That's another reason

Mousewithascarf · 14/01/2019 11:43

Is this a serious question?

CookPassBabtridge · 14/01/2019 11:44

My niece has always been much shorter than her classmates despite her sis being tall, she had reflux as a baby and never liked to eat much as a toddler/young girl so maybe there's something in that.

headinhands · 14/01/2019 11:48

The height thing is a social construct. And where would it end? Yours gets taller then most others get taller and we're just getting taller. For what?

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 14/01/2019 11:50

I read something a while back that said on an individual level genes determined potential height but things such as poor health or specific health conditions could prevent a child reaching their max height. Over time good diet and health slowly increased the average population height.

Harebellmeadow · 14/01/2019 11:50

😂 at the funny answers on here: compost, oceans and watering.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 11:58

I think that while milk is a good source of calcium that our ability to absorb the calcium from that source is poor. Whereas green veg like broccoli is much better. But before you take that as gospel, I'm not a dietitian - I just remember reading it somewhere.

MrsJayy · 14/01/2019 12:00

I agree about milk and also read about the absorbtion of calcium and if children are guzziling full fat milk after 2/3 they can pile weight on

Tony2 · 14/01/2019 12:02

Texans are all tall aren't they? Presumably the answer is burgers.

MrsJayy · 14/01/2019 12:04

I think maybe it is the cowboy boots the cuban heel adds a bit of lift Grin

Fiona2011231 · 14/01/2019 12:04

Yes, this is a serious question and I have learned so much from this thread. It gives me peace of mind.

I think my DS sleeps in a gro bag. Every holiday he eats and sleeps and grows, Doesn’t seem to grow much in term time.

Fromage · 14/01/2019 12:06

Everything's big in Texas, Tony. Look at Jerry Hall, she's basically a giant.
