Amber teething beads do nothing. Your child having an anklet is a choking hazard. Give them calpol if they’re suffering

RCohle · 10/01/2019 20:19

GoAmber and AmberPumpkin are the first that come up on google?

greendale17 · 10/01/2019 20:19

Friends who have bought an amber anklet recommend Amber Pumpkin.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 10/01/2019 20:21

They aren’t proven to help at all with teething pain and as a PP said, they are a choking hazard. They are just woo nonsense. Calpol. Cool/freezer teethers. Comfort the baby. Please don’t go down the amber route. You’lol be wasting your money and putting your baby at risk.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 10/01/2019 20:22

You’ll. Ffs autocorrect.

Jackshouse · 10/01/2019 20:23

Anbesol oil, nurofen and calpol all work on teething pain.

olympicsrock · 10/01/2019 20:25

Load of bollocks

lancslass17 · 11/01/2019 22:14

Thanks I know there's no science behind it but worth a try as some say it works (will be safe under his clothes)
We use ambesol and teething powders but he doesn't like calpol.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2019 22:21

It’s not worth a try. It’s just bollocks.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 11/01/2019 22:25

It isn't 'worth a try'.

greendale17 · 11/01/2019 22:27

I know people who swear by it. None of their babies choked. An anklet is far safer.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 11/01/2019 22:30

Greendale An anklet is no safer. The choking danger largely comes from the small beads.

MsMustDoBetter · 11/01/2019 22:43

I hear snake oil is good?

Micke · 11/01/2019 22:43

Either it works, and you're giving your baby an unknown dose of an unknown and in-tested substance, or it doesn't, and you're wasting your money and giving your child a choking hazard.

Either way, doesn't sound wise to me.

spugzbunny · 11/01/2019 22:45

Baby nurofen is better for teething - try that. Painkillers are the only thing that really will work. Amber and teething powders are both woo.

Monny1 · 11/01/2019 22:47

Load of rubbish,,

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2019 22:51

IF it works, it means you must have heated your baby to a temperature of 200c..........

copperkate · 11/01/2019 22:55

I don't know where you could get one from.

What what harm will trying one do?

OP has already stated it will be under the childs clothes, if they are wearing a baby grow the child wouldn't have access to it.

I'm sure OP doesn't want to put her child at risk of choking so will be sensible about it!

I work as part of a HV team and as we say to all parents, as long as you are aware of the risks and do everything you can to prevent them it's your decision. It's not something we routinely recommend but if you want to try it you will and I'm sure you'll do it sensibly!

DrWhy · 11/01/2019 22:59

There is no plausible mechanism by which they work sciencebasedmedicine.org/amber-waves-of-woo/
They are a choking hazard, if it breaks even under clothes you have dangerously sized beads around your baby.
I am pretty concerned that someone who works as part of a HV team would not discourage them.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 11/01/2019 23:01

It won't work. Anbesol is a god send though. You can try that on yourself and feel it numbing - you know, because it actually works

strawberrypenguin · 11/01/2019 23:07

If it worked we'd all be wearing Amber and using it as pain relief when we needed too.
Give him a cold teething toy and calpol instead. Unless next time you get a headache you're going to use amber instead of actual medication.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 11/01/2019 23:09

@strawberrypenguin feck you're right. I need an amber headdress immediately for the migraines....

copperkate · 11/01/2019 23:15

@DrWhy
I said we don't recommend them.

We don't recommend a lot of things, but we do give advice on safer ways to do things or use things to reduce the risk of harm to the child.

We don't recommend amber teething bracelets due to the risk of choking and the lack of scientific evidence that they actually work, but parents get desperate and still want to try them. Therefore we still give advice on how to reduce risks when they do use them.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2019 23:20

I do hope “don’t recommend” actually means “tell client that it’s bullocks and explain why”

copperkate · 12/01/2019 00:56

@BertrandRussell mumsnet parents are generally already quite knowledgable on these types of things. The majority of the families we support are not mumsnet yummy mummy types, although we do help lots of lovely mummies like that too. Some really do need it all spelling out for them, you'd probably be quite surprised!
