DD4 sore legs

Gribbie · 09/01/2019 16:35

My DD has been complaining about sore legs on and off for a few months. I’ve assumed it’s growing pains but I’m a little concerned that it’s still there. My older DS has never had any problems so it’s new to me. When should I worry?

Is there any pattern to the pain? Growing pains tend to be much worse in the evening

itsboiledeggsagain · 09/01/2019 21:01

My now 5 yo has had this really since she was old enough to say. I have just found out she is hypermobile and am currently blaming that.

ElyElyOy · 09/01/2019 21:07

How old is your DD?

Gribbie · 10/01/2019 11:48

Thank you all for answering. She is 4y 9m. I've not noticed her complaining at any particular time of day - but will keep an eye out. Probably started 2-3 months ago. If I ask where it hurts she says all over but usually points at her shins and knees.

It might be worth speaking to the GP and asking them to check her hip position etc.

greenelephantscarf · 10/01/2019 12:30

yes, go to gp.
unexplained pain (no injury, no unusual exercise level) should be followed up if it doesn't go away on it's own after a couple of days. especially if it's one sided.

could be as easy as flat feet which is easily treated with suitable shoes and/or insoles.

Gribbie · 10/01/2019 12:42

Thank you both. I'll make some notes over the next few days/weeks so I've got a a better idea of frequency etc then go to the dr. I do wonder if she's blagging me sometimes to try and avoid things...Grin

My ds problems turned out to be very tight Achilles' tendons, he's supposed to do exercises that the physio gave him but he won't do them. We initially saw the Gp who then referred us to a paediatric rheumatologist.

Lara53 · 15/01/2019 21:57

Physio will be better. GP was useless. My DS had painful legs for years and we were at the gp all the time. We finally saw a physio who diagnosed ds with short/tight tendons in his legs and flat feet. We had a few months treatment and he’s more or less pain free. When he does have pain we know how to deal with it. He also stretches/warms up properly before sport

I had this for years when I was younger. Doctor diagnosed "growing pains" multiple times. Not so - I'm hypermobile. Get it checked out - I think it might be easier to manage if you have a handle on it from a young age.

Gribbie · 17/01/2019 21:34

Thank you all. She’s only complained once in the last week so I’m going to monitor a little longer.

You could also try some Epsom salts in bath- low magnesium can cause muscle pains and it’s absorbed through the skin. Ideally soak for 10-20 mins 3 times a week. Also Vit D if she’s not already taking.

Really feel for your DC.
I suffered terribly with pains in my legs as a child. It was a really horrible pain, often in the night and there was little that could be done to relieve it. My mum would massage my legs with warmed lotion and it would help a little while waiting for calpol to kick in.
It was growing pains.

You're post has brought it all back! Hope she doesn't suffer with it too frequently.

As an sufferer of crippling anxiety I really wish I could stay away from Google. I am writing this after reading a devastatingly sad story of a 4 year old boy who started with leg pain. I am still crying now.

My son is 4 and a half. He has complained of leg pain now for at least 15 months. Last Feb he was finally sent for blood tests and we were called back the following day due to worryingly high white blood cells. I will never forget that feeling. The weeks of worry ahead destroyed me but I am glad to say there was nothing serious underlying.

However recently he is complaining of leg pain more regularly. Morning noon and night. Tends to be in one and he sometimes limps. It comes and goes and always points to his shins. When I tell him I need to take him to get it checked he becomes hysterical that it will be OK and he doesn't like needles. He thinks now everytime he goes to the doctors it means a needle, though it wouldn't surprise me if they wanted to take bloods again.
Tomorrow I am booking him an appointment but I feel sick worrying. Which I know isn't going to help but honestly just the thought terrifies me.

NGC2017 · 17/01/2019 22:05

I would like to apologise if my post has come across as though I am implying something is serious. I know this is very rare but due to my personal worries about my son and his pains it's probably be best to get things checked for your DD.
My thoughts are with you. It's a real worry when we can't figure out if they are having us on or genuinely having these pains.
Last year my son had to also undergo a brain scan due to headaches. I can still see him sedated in that tube now. For ages I thought he was making it up. Then one day the doctor said no, he wouldn't make that up at this age. In the end it turns out his eyes were the issue and that the one has trouble focusing. Something his paediatrician said to me and it will always stay with me. When they say they are in pain at that age you must believe them. So now I do. As I would rather be made to feel like a worrying mother than let it continue without a reason

greenelephantscarf · 17/01/2019 22:12

absolutely ngc
my dc's consultant rages about 'growing pains' diagnoses from gps.
pain always has a reason. and if that reason is not obvious (injury, exertion) then it needs to be investigated especially if one sided.

Gribbie · 21/01/2019 12:52

Hugs NGC. I hope your DS's pain is nothing serious. My DS was in hospital with ADEM early last year and had to have a lot of tests (bloods, lumber puncture, x rays, MRI) - it was traumatic. Thankfully he doesn't remember much from when he was very ill, but I still can't think about it without getting emotional. I hope you get your appt quickly. XX

She's not complained about it since I last updated so I'm going to wait a little longer. She did ballet and swimming on Sat and no pains.

How awful Gribbie. I am glad he doesn't remember much. Sadly my son naturally gets very anxious now at the thought of hospitals. He will scream how scared he is, and to be honest if you saw him you would believe he actually is terrified.
Being a Mom is one of the most worrying things ever. It was this time last year I was at the end of my tether with my DS constantly ill. Doctor's made out I was just an over-worrier. It was only because I demanded a reason why, that they ordered blood tests. I will never forget that phone call. I too feel very upset thinking about it. I am so glad for the good news we had at the end of the testing, but I feel it has made me on edge ever since.
My DS hasn't really complained either this weekend. The odd ow but he has been swimming and we have been walking a fair bit. He has his asthma check this week so I will mention it to the nurse then x

Gribbie · 24/01/2019 14:11

Yes!

When is the Asthma appt? xx
