6 month old had solids now no poo for 10 days

My 6 month old DS started solids 2 wks ago, very happily eating everything but he now hasn’t had a poo for 10 days.

I spoke to the doctor at 6 days and she wasn’t concerned, I am going to take him back tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any tips before I do?

He is just starting to get upset about it. Crying when pushing and not wanting to be on his back.

Still having wet nappies and still breastfeeding.

It’s hard getting water into him as he won’t take s bottle and hasn’t drunk much from a cup.

Have stopped giving him solids and just breastfeeding again.

Been doing lots of tummy massages and leg cycling. Anything else we could try? He just needs some relief

Don't give up the weaning but don't give too much carbohydrate. Focus on fruit and veg. Tummy massage might not be comfortable and I am not sure what good leg cycling can do. The stool is hard and will emerge. You may have gone a bit fast with weaning and less water so go steady but don't stop or you will be back to square one. A doctor is unlikely to do anything as it's not a good idea to medicate. Talk to your Health Visitor. If the stool is sitting there bulging, sometimes a gentle stroke around the anus with a vaselined finger might his sphincter a little relax . 10 days seems awful but is not really

Thank you, I guess the fibre from veggies could help couldn’t it. He loved having food but obviously his tum can’t keep up with it.

He has had 2 teeth come through in the last week as well so it’s a lot for him. He is really unsettled, he has to poo sometime I guess!

I was thinking of taking him to the docs as it’s Christmas and they will be closed if it got worse.

Was thinking of giving him prune juice

What solids were you giving him as rice can constipate as can banana?

KittenCamile · 23/12/2018 14:07

he has had 1 banana but no rice, he had a little porridge (I didn’t plan that he nicked some of mine) and had some of my pita dunked in soup but it’s all been fruit and veg apart from that.

I was aiming for 1 meal a day but he nicks bits of mine so has had more. I haven’t given him solids since Friday though

Avoid banana as it can bung you up in my experience. Mine went 6-7 days regularly until onto a lot of solids

Avoid banana and apples. Try prunes, pears, peaches. I found Ellas Kitchen pouches really handy, always had a stash of Prunes, Prunes, Prunes for times like that.

Breast milk is a laxative, however they can happily go 10 days without a poo when breastfed as they can be so efficient. However I too would be concerned if no poo for 10 days once weaning and they were distressed.
Agree with laying off the carbs, but keep giving veg and fruit ( apple and banana constipate). Don’t worry too much about taking water at the moment just encourage breastfeeding to keep up fluid intake. If they stop taking milk or food , seem unwell, less wet nappies, or vomit then contact 111

Omg I just baked a peach and a pear for him, he had hardly any and did a massive poo!!!!! Thank you so much for the recommendation. He isn’t constipated as it wasn’t hard or anything just like a yellow paste. A Christmas miracle!!!!

Aw congrats! Smile

Sounds like he’s just efficient. Keep going with weaning, you’ll probably find poo frequency increases with more solids in diet. Glad he’s been, what a relief
