Detecting temporary lactose intolerance

Bit of a long one. Please bare with x

I'm beginning to suspect my 9m old has possibly developed secondary lactose intolerance.
He's had diarrhoea for over three weeks. No obvious changed to diet.
I've been putting the loose nappies down to teething. The gp thinks teething or viral or a bit of both.
Baby has had awful nappy rash all weepy and bleeding. Incredibly sore.
We saw the nurse who prescribed hydrocortisone which began to work but each loose stool irritated the rash back to square one.
We then got an antifungal and hydrocortisone cream which began helping within a day.
I had some lacto free milk in the cupboard and on a whim decided to use it up (there was a days worth) to see if it helped.
Within the day baby's stools were not watery any more and were only half as frequent. He slept all night and only pooped once compared with 5 times or so previous nights.
Today he's returned to the usual formula. Diarrhoea has slowly been returning and his poor nappy rash is coming back.
The gp took a stool sample but the results will be another few days.
I don't want to go back to the 10-15 nappy changes a day with a sore bleeding bottom. It was horrendous.
I'm hoping the antifungal helps keep the worst of the rash away for now.

Will they be able to tell if it's a lactose issue from the sample do you think?
I don't know what to do. I don't want to just sit and wait, but I'd rather not just cut out lactose without some medical advice first.
With it being the weekend and Xmas we're not likely to get to see a gp for at least a week or more 😪

You could try adding colief to the usual formula as it will break down the lactose

I'd just go for it. When my DD had temporary lactose intolerance the GP didn't test for it, just got advice from the local children's ward and suggested we try lactose free formula. She was fine within about 6 hours, so we kept her lactose free for as few weeks before going back to lactose.

Thanks. I'm going to grab some lactase drops this morning and see how we go with those x

I suffer lactose problems very hard to pin point, but honestly, your little one must be all over the place, myself I would just stick with lactose free until you get results, its not going to hurt, and if it saves the upset its a no brainer, what have you got to lose, other than a few bad nappies.
Or because its christmas and you cant get dr you could if you could phone NHS helpline for advice, or health visitor if you can get hold of one, but mother's instinct is the best, sorry to hear you having such a bad time, I know its awful. Best wishes for 2019.
