My 20 month had been off form for two weeks nd very high temperatures etc. I thought that dc was getting chicken pox as had been exposed so that’s why I didn’t go to the dr. After too long I took him to dr as he had a temp of almost 40.
He has a bad case of tonsillitis. He’s been prescribed 5ml of kopen 4 times a day for 10 days. I’m having huge issues with getting it in. I have tried the whole trying to get it in by syringe into the cheek but he gags and spits it up or vomits. I have also been mixing it with you yogurt. That has been successful but this evening he just won’t eat it. This is a wasted dose.
He’s missed at least two proper doses with spitting out etc. Will I have to try and get more?

Mix it in with a flavoured milkshake?

madmum5811 · 21/12/2018 18:13

ah, I use the yoghurt. Milkshake is good in a bottle. I used to mix it with jam as well. You could use honey. It tastes bloody awful to be honest.

Thanks for your reply. I am just worried though as he’s missed doses through spitting out. I know that it’s important to get all the doses in so could this affect the effectiveness of the antibiotics? And should i try and get more?

My 22 mo was the same. I ended up putting her lying on her back on a towel on a soft rug, straddling her with her arms and legs pinned, one hand on her head to keep it still, then tiny drops from the syringe until it was all in. Absolutely dreadful for both of us but got it in. After a few doses she stopped fighting it. Mixing it with anything failed, squirting or spooning in fast would be spat out or vomited up. Aiming the small drops under her tongue helped. Iwas on my own at the time so this was the only way that worked.

My ds likes calpol, so I'd do the antibiotics at the same time.

Get 3 syringes

  1. Half a dose of calpol
  2. Antibiotics (squirt down quick)
  3. Other half of

Calpol

Is he old enough for bribery? Show chocolate buttons (or those milky bar stars are v sweet), say that he can have one immediately after he has the medicine, and that the chocolate will work to take the taste away from his mouth (which is true). This worked for us with very bitter antibiotics, though DS was about 4 or 5 yrs old.

LtGreggs · 21/12/2018 19:06

Also if you think he has almost completely spat out a dose, you could give him a second (if you can work out how!)

I share your pain. My ds (2) is on an iron solution recovering from pneominia. He will not take it at all. I’ve tried everything. Luckily he’s a good eater so pretty much everything we shove in him is green.

He gets so distressed he wretched and vomits, so no iron goes in and the food he’s eaten comes back up! Very stressful.

Gp did prescribe us suppository calpol though which has been a god send. If only anti biotics came this way. Grin

You can sometimes get an alternative more palatable antibiotic if you explain to gp/pharmacist.

The odd missed dose won't matter. I thought my DD would end up on IV as she was such a nightmare but she got better without all the drugs luckily.

DS was a nightmare with antibiotics recently. We laid him on the floor on his back, held him down and syringed into the back of his cheek... he had to swallow it else he would choke. We then followed up with 2 chocolate buttons each time. By the end of the week he just laid on the floor when he saw the syringe.
