Child still being sick

I'm totally confused with what is happening with DD2.

She woke last Thursday after being sick in her cot, and then was sick again half an hour later. Got her to sleep a couple of hours later and she slept all night. The following morning after drinking some milk, she was sick twice again within the space of half an hour, around 9am. Then nothing again for the rest of Friday and slept all of Friday night. She was fine all Saturday too and we put her to bed as normal. At 5am on Sunday morning, almost 2 days after last being sick, she was sick in her cot again, just the once.

After that she was fine all Sunday, slept through on Sunday night and was fine today. We put her to bed as normal but woke about half an hour ago. We brought her downstairs and she asked for some milk. She's just been sick again, almost 2 days again from the last time.

What's going on, I really don't know what to do. Should I stop feeding her or letting her have milk, should I take her to the doctors. She has had a cold and has always been a child who can be sick to get the rubbish of their chest. Is it a bug, there's allsorts going around at the minute. Just not sure what to do or if we just have to ride it out.

How old is she? Have you phoned NHS direct?

Try not giving her dairy for a couple of days, if she had a sickness bug it can make children temporarily lactose intolerant. Hence being sick again.

I went through this not too long ago...

It was on and off for a few weeks and it’s was before and after a couple of things, took her to the doctor she was prescribed ranitidine for some reason (I don’t think it was reflux she has suffered this for a while and never sick with it) but it eventually just got better.

So this coincided with

  • a bad cold and very snotty nose!
  • 2 teeth coming through
  • recovery after a bad virus
  • sleep regression and separation anxiety (not sure how relevant but just to make the point there was a lot going on!)

We made her last feed a lot earlier and gave her a little water if she woke up as we think the milk was making it worse.

Like I said the GP said it was reflux and tested her urine anyway in case it was an infection etc but it just seemed to get better.

It was proper projectile sick though... looked like more than any feed she took!

Sorry I can’t give much advice! It is worrying but hopefully nothing!

Yes dd and ds both have had a bug exactly the same as this. Sick 2 days nothing then sick. Itvtricks you into thinking it’s gone then comes back again.

She's 2. She's completely fine in the days in between the sick. She plays, laughs, talks, eats and drinks. She has had a few diarrhoea nappies but thats gone now.

Sounds like milk is the culprit. Cut out all dairy and see how she is.

Pissedoff1234 · 18/12/2018 00:39

She absolutely loves her bottle. We've been trying to get her onto cups for months now but she just won't drink anything else. She won't take water or juice in a cup or in a bottle.

What about watering the milk down. Would this work.

I don't know tbh, I've always just avoided dairy for a couple of days after a bug for the kids but then they have always drunk water as well as milk. Maybe try some very weak squash in a bottle? I know it's not recommended but it's better than no fluids surely?

ElyElyOy · 18/12/2018 17:40

What about lactose free milk, a2 I think Is all the rage now

Ozziewozzie · 21/12/2018 21:01

I’d definately try watering down the milk if she won’t settle without it. At first just add a little water. Clever little monkeys notice everything! Then each time you give her milk add a bit more water if you’re weaning her down.

Milk can increase mucus production. When sleeping it sits at the back of nose and throat. When it builds up enough it can cause a sudden surge of coughing, then boom, out comes the entire contents.

Also try shoving a pillow under her mattress to raise it a little to help any gunk drain away.
