Undescended testicles

Hello,
I'm a Mum of 3 boys but also work as a paediatric surgeon. I am doing a research project on the treatment of boys with undescended testicles and would love to get some help from Mums of boys who have undescended testicles. I am hoping to find out about your experiences of getting your sons treated and whether you think my research project is asking the right questions!
If you would be interested in getting involved please reply to this thread or you can send me an email at [email protected]
Many thanks!
Clare

Hi there
The mumsnet collective tends to get a bit suspicious of apparently new posters that ask questions about children's genitals. If you describe a bit more about your research project it might help people decide if you are authentic, and thus increase your response rate.

What age cohorting are you doing to account for how advice over age for surgical review and intervention has changed in the last few years?

Sorry for seeming dubious. Yes the guidance for when to do surgery has changed and it’s now recommended at 6-12 months. I’ve just done an national audit which found that only 12% of boys got their operation at the recommended age. Some of this is due to late referral but I also surveyed paediatric surgeons and found that just over half didn’t agree with the guidance. They are worried about whether the outcome of surgery is as good at an earlier age and there is some concern about whether having a general anaesthetic when you’re young might affect brain development. I’m interested to find out what parents of boys with undescended testicles think about timing of surgery and whether they would like further research into this. Many thanks, Clare
