Flucloxacillin nightmare

DD who's 3 was given flucloxacillin yesterday for an infection in the nail bed and it's absolutely foul.
She has to have 5ml 4 times a day and I just don't know how we are going to do it.

I've mixed it with strong juice, normally she drinks water so even the juice is odd for her before we throw the medicine in as well.

We did get better success mixing with a chocolate yoghurt but I can't do that 4 times a day for the next week!

Any try and tested methods or foods you've found to hide the taste?

The only repeat success I've had is to mix it with a generous tablespoonful of one of those ice-cream topper syrups (usually chocolate). But it is disgusting- I prescribe it as little as possible and there should be other options available, especially if there's a culture result.

My daughter had this a few years back. It's absolutely foul isn't it. I went back to the doc and asked them to give her something else. There's other suitable antibiotics to give, but they go with this one first because it's the cheapest.

We used to half wake them in the night for at least one dose.

Bribery for the rest.

I've managed to get this mornings in slowly mixed with chocolate milkshake, but it was still a struggle.
Luckily she's not back in nursery until Tuesday as I don't think they are going to be happy trying to get her to take it twice during the day, least we will get 4 days in yourselves at the start.

She knows why she needs it and we have spoken about even though it's yucky it will stop her finger hurting, but very difficult at 3.

It says to have on an empty stomach as well, and that is never going to happen, we tried doing it quick with the syringe on the 1st go and it came straight back out again.

My 3YO had to have antibiotics for tonsillitis a few months ago and it was a nightmare! I think I resorted to putting it in juice and milkshake for him. I'm not sure how much he actually consumed!!

B.S.

It's used because it works for skin infections the overwhelming majority or the time has excellent oral bioavailability and relatively few side effects.

I've had people in hospital for 3 weeks on (incidentally much more expensive) other antibiotics IV as they claimed to be allergic to penicillin with some vague story from childhood.

Eventually gave fluclox, better in 3 doses...

WillChellam · 08/12/2018 09:12

The other thing that needs looking at is why there's a nailbed infection... Is there's an abscess it needs letting out, ingrowing nail needs trimming etc

Daffodils07 · 08/12/2018 12:21

My 2 year old has just finished it, but she had to have 10ml 4 times a day as the pharmacist at the hospital didn't have a 250 and it was a Sunday.
She was in hospital for 3 days on iv antibiotics and very poorly.
Bloody vile stuff and I had to pin her down and squirt it right at the back of her mouth.
But after the first day she just knew she had to have it and that it was better then me forcing her to.
Not nice but it's something that has to be done.

youlemming · 08/12/2018 19:32

WillChellam she had her fingers squished under a ride on toy in the nursery garden and there was damage to the skin around the bottom of the nail on one
