Can someone give me some advice? Dd, 3 has come out in chicken pox spots this morning. Her older brother, 6 has never had it. We go away to center parcs on the 21st until 27th.

What are the chances ds has already got it from Dd? If he has what do we do? We paid thousands for the holiday and booked (and paid for)tonnes of lovely xmas activities. Wwyd?

There's not much you can do I'm afraid. I'd maybe get some poxcilin, encourage them not to scratch, oatbaths etc so dry them out as soon as possible.

I'd maybe try and keep the children apart as best you can to minimise the chances of ds catching it.

One of my DDs was poorly for a fortnight, the other for just 4 days. It's impossible to predict.

You still have a good couple of weeks until you go. Worst case is maybe that you have to go a little bit later than planned 🤷 maybe move any activities that are earlier in the week?

MerryGinmas · 07/12/2018 09:13

PS I hope it's out of her system swiftly and that ds doesn't catch it X

Average time before chickenpox to come out is 10 days. Your daughter has been infectious for 2 days before the spots came out. So it's likely your son will get them in about 8 days.

5 days average for the spots to scab over and not be infectious anymore - Takes you to the 23rd so you will likely be ok.

They do say it's up to 21 days for spots to come out though. If you have holiday insurance you can claim on that, although I know people wouldn't think to get that with a UK holiday

Thank you.

We did book insurance for precisely this reason. We knew both kids hadnt had it, and it was going to be an expensive holiday. I just cant bear the thought of cancelling, the kids are booked onto pony rides through the forest, meeting santa, elf workshops Sad the lot. Weve been talking about it for months, dh has had a terrible time at work and is never home and it's the first holiday weve had together in ages.

Would just feel mean to take ds and keep him in bless him. I don't know what's worse, staying home or bringing him and trying to keep him entertained in the lodge.

I will just pray for him to get it sooner rather than later I suppose. It's all guesswork really. Luckily dd isnt even scratching yet. Shes got lots but is coping so far so I should be grateful of that for now. It would be less irritating if it hadn't been for us being pretty much stuck in the house for the last 2 weeks because of d & v, plus tonsilitis and croup. Been a rough winter this year

It was 15 days between my dd and ds getting it.

Avocado0nToast · 07/12/2018 12:36

The same thing happened to us before a holiday last year. My 2 year old got it first and my 5 year old got it 10 days later. I know a few people this happened with, all 10-12 days later. To be honest, if it came out in your older one by the 17th you would probably be crusting over by the 21st and not contagious. The spots seem to come out over 3 days. BUT I guess with a holiday like Center Parcs using the pools might be a problem if they look really spotty. My youngest was covered, my 5 year old had much less spots and only 1 or 2 on her face so could cover it up a bit...

DS came out in spots 14 days after DD so it can take a while

MissesBloom · 07/12/2018 13:16

Dsil said her dds came out 14 days apart. Just got to hope were lucky. It's a miracle hes never had it before, hes gone through nursery, reception and year one with numerous breakouts and never come down with it Confused

I think I've decided if he gets it a day before we go or the day we go well cancel. Will have to just rebook for next year and break it to the kids gently Sad bloody chicken pox! Knew I should have gotten them immunised earlier this year

Thanks everyone

you can get a vaccination for your second child as long as its something like 3-5 days after contact and your first will be over it in time. don't panic!

MissesBloom · 07/12/2018 14:05

Really Di11y? Dont they have to have two vaccines for them to be covered? Not sure how far apart they are?

Ds2 came out in spots exactly 26 days after ds1 - at which point we'd assumed he was clear and had gone away for Easter. Honestly, you'll just have to wait and see but if he's clear, go.

MissesBloom · 12/12/2018 17:08

Shock 26 days?! You must have thought it was well and truly done with!

It's just the worst. I think we've decided to go no matter what. We're so down at the moment we just need a bit of joy especially the kids. It's been week after week of illness and antibiotics, and two exhausted parents. They just need a nice break.

Worst ways he'll have to stay in the lodge and away from Indoor public places while he's contagious. Hopefully it won't affect him for the whole week

You May be able to get anti virals from your dr, or the chicken pox vaccine is effective a couple of days after exposure but neither are routinely available unless immunocompromised. Unfortunately you May just be unlucky and you'll need to make the call whether to cancel or hope it's mild
